Hope the BCers can check to see their fish in the dark before buying it.
Here's a better idea. If it's so safe bottle it and sell it to the Japanese Gov't officials who are strangely silent about this latest idiotic decision from the people who brought you that fun filled historical event called Fukushima.
But you've got to love this statement:
Olympic swimming will be interesting this year. They can hold it at night with no lights needed because of the dumping.
I love how nuclear waste has become the latest boogey man.
The radioactivity is significantly reduced when compared to the initial disaster.
Even if it were, the point of putting it in the ocean is that it will quickly dilute to the point of being completely harmless.
Nuclear waste in very deep water doesn't spread the way an oil slick does. A lot of the obsolete enemy WW2 battleships that the US used as a target "fleet" at the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests in 1946 survived* the explosions. They were highly irradiated so the Navy towed them out to the deepest locations that they knew of and sank them. Various expeditions have surveyed the sunken ships since and they're still radioactive. But the radiation is very localized to the vicinity of the shipwrecks. It hasn't spread very far away from the hulks. The intense water pressure at those depths has the effect of keeping the radiation from spreading very much at all. Definitely hazardous to any sea life that exists that far down but it hasn't done anything at all to any of the fish or mammals living in the waters far above the wrecks.
Japan seems like one of the more conscientious nations out there in certain respects. Given how embarrassing Fukushima is for them it's doubtful they'll make it even worse for themselves by disposing of the waste in anything but the best possible location for it's safe disposal. They probably aren't so stupid to sell it to China or India to dump in a river or put in the dog food that gets sent to Walmart.
*DKM Prinz Eugen represent! That tough old fucker was nearly impossible to sink no matter how much post-war test damage was inflicted on it. In truth a lot of German vehicles and ships have a highly over-rated reputation. In reality ones like the King Tiger tank and the Bismarck were built already outclassed or were just a colossal waste of resources that should have been used elsewhere on much more effective materiel. The Prinz Eugen battleship though earned it's rep. It was just one damn well-built and tough as hell ship.
You don't remove tritium from water, you remove the water from the tritium. High speed centrifuges are a big part of this process.
It can be done but the Japanese are likely very squeamish about taking a major step towards building hydrogen bombs.
I doubt they're squeamish with China at their back door. They're diplomatic enough to not discuss it in public.
Oh, I get it!
Nukes are scary! Ergo, the price of nuclear powered electricity can be kept artificially high!
