is their a possibility?

camerontech @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:15 am

sure, why not. maybe not in my lifetime but I can see North America having the two biggest super powers in the world.
who knows

juggernaut @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:16 am

yes i can see that too.

A world power? Yes that is possible but not a superpower or anything like that. Unless our climate warms up and we gain a longer growing season and start supporting more people maybe. But with our population peaking and relying heavily on immigration from more unfamiliar regions of the globe it is unlikely. I think the west is taking and has been taking a downturn. Europe first but now North America will too. If countries in Africa got their act together or put aside their differences and united in a more common partnership they could become more influential. South America has been growing and the Asiatic too. This century belongs to those outside of the West and could lead to the collision of civilisations especially those in the ancient world. The 22nd if all survives will most likely belong to those outside of Europe and North America and they will be the powers of the world and we will be more their subordinates.

subordinates....? I don't fucking think so

Poisson @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:43 am

I thought it is already considered to be a great power alongside with Britain, France, Japan, China, Russia, Germany, and few more.

Well time will tell but that is my prediction.

Well, we have the economy and natural resources, but lack the military and population. The military could be created rather quickly, say a decade or so, but as Clog said, our population has already peaked and now relies on immigration for more than half its gorwth.

If we had the will, Canada could be a major power on the scale of say the UK or France, but I don't realistically see that happening in our lifetime, unless there is another major global conflict similar to WW2.

No, the next great power will likely be China or India. My bet is on India actually. They didn't slow population growth like China did, they have a booming economy, and they are on good terms (relatively speaking) with the West. Winston Churchill once said something like the most important factor in the 20th century was that America spoke English. I'd say something similar except substitute India for America and 21st for 20th century.

Only in the plots of low budget Sci-Fi movies.

Canada has the potential to be much more than it is on the world stage. However we will never be more than a member of the half dozen or so influential and economic powers of the world

After the Second World War this country had the potential to be a world super power. Most of that potential was flushed down the toilet by a load of socialist idealism. Who knows; maybe with the right leadership that potential and spirit can be resurrected. Sadly though I think we’ll have to take a bad beating or two before that can happen.

Hey stupid I noticed you have ignored the other thread when I asked if you knew who rescued your surrounded paras in Helmand province. For you to chew on, it was members of the PPCLI. Princess Patricias CANADIAN Light Infantry. As for any other asinine comments from yourself, please go back to eating your deep fried toast and piss off! PDT_Armataz_01_35
