Any suggestions..

Hey I know this isn't in French, but I want to learn French. I mean, its one of our national languages as well as it could very well help me in the future.. So anyway, I need suggestions on what I should do to learn it. I took it in High School, as was mandatory, but didn't follow up because the courses they offered later on were too tough.

Anyway, should I look for local lessons or should I buy some of that "Learn it yourself" crap. And if I should go through schools/tutoring (Most likely eh?) any suggestions for lessons/schools whatever in the Ottawa area? Or if you know of anyone in Smiths Falls ONT or Perth ONT that'd be great.

Find yourself a pretty little French girl. Hang out in bars in Hull. Move to a French-speaking community...it doesn't have to be in Quebec, they are scattered all over this country.

The best way to learn any language is to hear it. By reading it, you'll understand the grammar but the brain seems to be able to learn quicker by hearing what it wants to practice.

Buy a book for reference and ask someone or go to a class to speak it.

Commence par écrire un texte en français, on pourra toujours évaluer ton niveau à l’écrit ;-)

Sans blague, si tu veux te faire l’oreille, je te suggérerais de regarder certaines émissions à Radio-Canada … j’imagine que tu arrives à capter le poste dans ton coin ?

Il y a les émissions informatives qui s’expriment dans un « français standard » comme Enjeux (mardi à 21h00) et Zone libre (vendredi à 21h00) qui sont très intéressantes.

Sinon, dans un français typique de chez nous, je te suggère de regarder la télé-série Rumeurs (lundi à 19h30) qui est excellente ou Un gars, Une fille (mercredi 20h30) suivi par les Bougon (là, c’est du français et de l’humour très typique d’ici, mercredi 21h00)). Le dimanche soir, il y a une émission de variété qui s’appelle Tout Le monde en parle à 20h00 qui porte très bien son nom;-). Sinon, il y a une bonne série qui s’appelle la vie, la vie qui est disponible en DVD (j’imagine que l’option de sous-titrage est disponible).

As-tu accès au cinéma québécois dans les salles près de chez toi ? Si oui, dans le moment, il y en a deux à l’affiche qui sont super bon : Elles étaient 5 (drame) et Les Aimants (comédie romantique). Les deux valent le détour ! Je te suggère de les voir sous-titrés évidemment, sinon, ce sont de bons films de toute façon.

En DVD, il y les films Le Violon Rouge, La Turbulence des Fluides, Les Invasions barbares, La grande Séduction, la face cachée de la lune, qui sont très bien et qui sont d’ici, donc, peut-être disponibles dans vos clubs vidéos !?

Aimerais-tu que je te fasse une sélection musicale ? Tu n’as qu’à demander si ça t’intéresse, ça va me faire un plaisir de te soumettre une « playlist » des chansons d’ici et d’ailleurs.

Laconfir, si tu aimrais apprendre le français, pratiquer! La première idée fausse ici est causerie en Anglais dans les forums français! Il ne peut pas travailler si tu ne vas pas utiliser la langue de le forum

I assume that you want to learn Patois, which is what they speak in Quebec, not French, which is what they speak in France. In any event, you have been given good advice, except in these days of the internet you don't need to move, just do chats in whatever language you want to learn. Also, watch kids' tv in that language.

Quebecois isn't patois. It's Quebecois. It has it's own standards.

French French is exactly that, French French. There's a different dialects. It's like saying American-English is a patois. It's not, again, it has a set of standards.

La langue Québecoise n'est pas un "joual" non plus, c'est une langue quelque peu dérivé du Français au même titre que le français parlé en Belgique l'est. Nous avons notre argot ( commun populaire ) mais ce n'est pas notre langue.
