Why geeklog?

Oy, you're asking me to think back almost 2 years now. Let's see...

1) it's free (libre) software, though the others you mentioned were as well
2) it has a plugin architecture, with many pre-written plugins that we are using (and one of our own)
3) it's fairly mature
4) it has advanced permissions/security, so that we can have admins with limited powers as well as uber-admins
5) it is in use on at least one heavy-usage site (www.groklaw.net)

Wordpress and many others are basically for blogs, while geeklog is basically for news sites.

Drupal is closer, though it still looks more aimed at small communities of bloggers. We could probably have made it work, but I wasn't aware of it at the time.

Geeklog is currently limiting us in a couple of ways though. We severely need better translation/multilingual capabilities, and we need distributed moderation like slashdot or kuro5hin. For now, it's Good Enough(TM). It might actually be getting time to look for something better though, I haven't had a look for a while (mambo seems nice, but I think it's in the same class as drupal).

btw, civicspace would probably be a somewhat better fit for us than 'standard' blog/CMS software. (it is apparently based on drupal...)

Thank you. I notice the DailyKos uses Scoop, as does Kuroshin I think too.

I don't know if anything is a perfect fit for Vive. But Geeklog seems the closest. Vive is definately closer to Groklaw than to the DailyKos.

I was quite impressed by http://www.dadaimc.org CMS used on recent release of BC Indymedia. You can see the advantage of sharing same infrastructure for news, articles, forums, and blogs.

Le Canard (&DDC) uses e107 but have found quite a few annoying missing features. Framework is English although it has the localization (language) hooks. There are a few English-only holes and plug-in are typically first released for English only market.

In regards to Vive bilingualism, I must point out that in many ways it repeats the microcosm thing without necessarily pushing it. Improved interoperations with other French sites appear more realistic. Also improved internal interoperations would be useful too: what should be the rules of use of French on this site for instance?
