Tornado watches, heat waves and rainfall: Rocky long weekend weather

Up north, Nunavut may not be officially facing a heat wave yet, but special weather statements for several regions in the territory warn that “warm air over western Canada will work its way eastward today and remain in the area until at least Wednesday.”

This resulting wave of warmth is expected to result in record-breaking highs for several communities in Nunavut, according to Environment Canada.

Wow.

Pretty much the same here.

Cool, but thunderstorms also . Woke me up in the middle of the night too.

Cool today, and rain till this after noon.

Strutz @ Sun Aug 16, 2020 9:35 pm

Weird right now. Partly cloudy but still fairly warm (25C/29C with humidex as of 9pm according to EnviroCanada)

Lots of flashes of lightning but no thunder.

DrCaleb @ Mon Aug 17, 2020 5:56 am

Hot! 31 yesterday, and not a cloud. 33 today, possible t-storms this evening.

DrCaleb @ Tue Aug 18, 2020 7:53 am

No thunderstorms last night. But at least it goes down to 16, not 20 like in July.

Can you take the heat? It's going to be another scorcher

Alberta broke heat records on Aug. 16, according to Environment Canada

Yesterday I travelled for work to Little Grand Rapids. It was +24°C, but the manager of the store insisted on blasting the truck air conditioning full blast. While waiting for the aircraft to arrive at the airport, I had to step out of the truck a couple times because it was so cold. I asked him how long he had managed stores in the Northwest Territories; his answer was long! Little Grand Rapids is north of Winnipeg, but he said it was the northern most store he's ever worked in. I pointed out that I had to wear a long-sleeve shirt outside, and he's blasting he air conditioning full blast.

Today I'm back home in Winnipeg. It's +33°C in the shade! I sweated while carrying a heavy tool backpack. I went shopping after the last work assignment. Carrying at 10kg bag of sugar plus a 4+kg bag of groceries plus a 20+kg backpack of tools, while walking multiple blocks in the sun between stores? I sweated bullets! Had dinner in A&W in air conditioning; ordered dinner with ice tea plus tap water. Clerk gave me a large glass refrigerated mug of tap water. Drank the hole thing, then went back for another glass of tap water. Finally was able to start eating my dinner. Clerk told me they offer free refills of soda drinks, I ordered ice tea. But it had to drink both large chilled glasses of water before I could drink the soda.

Am I wimpy for complaining about +33°C weather plus sunshine? While wearing black slacks and a long-sleeve grey shirt? Carrying a heavy load?

I love this weather. Sure, the sweating is tough, sleeping is hard, but I have a good memory and relive it when it's -40. ;)
