Some people are proposing Harry as the next Governor General, proponents claim 63% of those polled support it.
Wonder how many forgot about elected GGs and Canadian citizens as GG?

Don't get me wrong because I like Harry which might be in part because he's a fellow veteran but making him the GG would set us as a country back to a time before Vincent Massey and do we really want to relive the past that badly?

That poll's got to be a joke but then again if they did that they'd have some justification for providing security for him and Meghan because as it stands now we're paying for their security and they aren't doing one hell of alot to earn that perk.

Meagain isn't British.

She will be. She applied for Citizenship IIRC before she married Harry. The process for her is no different than for anyone else.

Although I know I shouldn’t be giving this any oxygen...other European countries do have monarchs but they seem to be able to avoid the undignified mass hysteria about every obscure relative of the head of state that grips the poor old Brits and many others in the Anglosphere. In particular, why any man has an interest in this absurd soap opera is quite beyond me.

Agreed. Couldn't give less of a shit.

Third... I don't like reality TV or soap operas and this is a little bit of both.

Most of the soap opera is generated by the British tabloids.

Did you notice the couple were in Canada for 6 weeks, and there wasn't a single picture of them in the news? Our press is vastly different than in the UK.

Oh and we even get to pay for it.

At least a Million $$$ a year, if not more..

$1:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed taxpayers in his country should pick up the huge bill for the couple’s round-the-clock protection while they are in the country, the Evening Standard has learned.

Mr Trudeau — still dealing with the fall-out from the downing of a Ukrainian aircraft by the Iranian military which killed 57 Canadians — has privately assured the Queen that Harry, Meghan and Archie’s safety will not be jeopardised while they reside there.

But it is feared that the move to pay about half the estimated £1 million annual bill could lead to a “furious” backlash in the country and threatens to damage the status of the monarchy there.

A poll conducted in August 2017 found that 41 per cent of Canadians wanted to abolish the monarchy following the death or abdication of the Queen, while 43 per cent were in favour of maintaining ties.

Since Harry is quitting the Royal Family and giving up all the perks... why should we pay him anything, including security?

Queen agrees 'transition' for Harry and Meghan

Well if the Queen is ok with it then everyone else can back off.

Why a move to Canada makes sense for Prince Harry and Meghan

Image

In recent days, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has been branded an "ego-crazed" leech, "incredibly irritating," and "insufferable" by esteemed members of the British press. And yet they're shocked that she's made the decision, along with her husband Prince Harry, to leave the U.K. for North America.

On Monday, the Queen released a statement saying the Royal Family "respect" and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family, while remaining a valued part of the institution. "It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K.," it read.

Since the couple made their decision to "step back" from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family last Wednesday, the U.K. media has been thrown into a frenzy. How could they do this to the Queen? What does this new "progressive role" mean? Who will be paying for their security costs overseas?

But most importantly, why move to Canada?

Having immigrated to Canada from London 20 years ago for a better quality of life, I know the appeal all too well.

In fact, although I'm currently working in the media in the U.K., I still regularly visit the country that welcomed me and my family with open arms, so I'm well aware of the social and cultural differences. There's no doubt that Harry and Meghan would enjoy a relatively peaceful life if they relocate to Canada.

Not only is celebrity culture almost non-existent in Canada, but fascination with the Royal Family tends to take a far more friendly tone.

In contrast, there's no escaping the paparazzi in places like London.

While the U.K.'s reality TV stars relish the flashing bulbs of photographers, several celebrities will recall "terrifying" experiences of erratic driving and little to no privacy as photographers go to extreme lengths to get "the shot." This is because there is no governing body for paparazzi — it's a grey area.

The paparazzi and tabloid culture prevalent in the U.K. is clearly something Harry is wary of. Last year, the Prince said that every camera flash "takes him back" to the tragedy of his mother's death in 1997, grief which he compared to a "wound that festers."

Sorry but that doesn't cut it. When I'm paying for something I want value for money and if these two intend to settle in the New World and sit on their ass, they can pay for their own security, wages and other sundries their status as Royals used to entitled them to.

Besides, since the 2016 election we've had our own form of left wing Royalty sitting on his ass doing nothing so, we don't need anymore of these self entitled types receiving the Queens crown while living a lifestyle most of us could only dream about.

But it might be a moot point since Trudeau apparently decided that the Canadian people would be happy paying the bill for these two's security.

Although, they are wrong about the cost damaging the monarchy in Canada because it's idiotic largess with taxpayers money like the PM's planning that's going to do considerably more damage to the PM than the Queen.

With a headline like that I fully expected to see Harry in a floral dress and Meghan applying for a job as a welder in a bib overall, while smoking a cigar. ROTFL

Should be good for tourism.
