Hard landing for West Jet flight in Regina
The Canadian Press
POSTED AT 4:49 PM Wednesday, April 21
Passengers and crew of a WestJet 7-37 were forced to flee the aircraft today in Regina after the right main landing gear caught fire after the plane landed.
WestJet spokeswoman Siobhan (shuh-VAHN') Vinish says no one was injured on Flight 2-10 from Calgary.
She says the approach and landing just before one this afternoon were normal.
Upon landing, the aircraft was notified by the tower that there was a fire on the right main wheel.
She says 110 passengers and six crew members slid down an emergency exit to the tarmac.
The aircraft has been grounded and is being inspected to determine what caused the fire.
Most of the passengers on the flight are from the Regina area.
I know a lot of pilots ('cause I used to be one) and when WestJet was just starting out, there were stories flying around about them. A lot of these stories explain how they were able to start up so cheap. They ranged between everything from hiring pilots that had been fired from other airlines for unsafe practices (don't have to pay them as much), to cheaping out on equipment. A lot of the guys I know in the aviation industry will not fly with them. And no, it's not because they work for a rival airline or anything, most of these guys were bush pilots, fligh instructors, air ambulance pilots etc.
No stories that I have proof for or anything, but I heard a lot of them from reliable sources...
You've got to be joking. To think an airline would actually skimp on safety to save a buck. I have flown WestJet a lot and saftey has always been of the upmost importance. They are friendly, funny and ontime... not like the other guys. I think you should get your facts straight, try and fly them then make an opinion before going on an ranting about how unsafe they are.
hmmmmm.......maybe i'm not so good at reading...but i think that what was posted was nothing but facts.
however you said

To think an airline would actually skimp
sorry dude but facts are facts. opinions are opinions. if a fact is posted from a reliable source then u can't argue the fact with an opinion.
i don't disagree with
$1:
They are friendly, funny and ontime
b/c that is true but i just don't see how u can post what u did. (the rest of it)
First of all, I would just like to say that you really need to do some research before you start flapping your gums about something you know nothing about. I work for westJet and I am very fimiliar with their saftey practices. I know for a fact that they do not hire bush pilots or others that have been terminated for prior positions. In order to fly with WestJet, you need to have a certain number of hours in a commercial position. Also you need to have your Boeing 737-200 or 700 series endorsment. Last time I looked, they were'nt flying too many Boeing 737's in the bush. I can tell you right now that WestJet's saftey record is spottless. I know alot of the maintenance people personally. I can also tell you that after a certain number of hours in the air, they go over the entire aircraft and do not bring it back into service until they know 100% with out a doubt that it is safe for our guests. If there is so much as a slight dent on the aircraft, it is immediatly pulled out of service and checked from top to bottom, nose to tail. So next time you wanna run off at the mouth, I suggest you do some reasearch first.

Right now WesJet is lobying really hard to reduce a safety regulation that costs them money. They want to reduce the number of flight attendants required on flights.
http://www.cupe.ca/www/495/oneinfifty?s ... 1555b15066You better believe they are doing the bare minimum to comply with safety regs in other areas too.

I will not fly WesJet for reasons previously stated. You can fly whoever you like, it's a free country. I don't recall 'ranting' about anything, read my post again.

Calm down sweetheart, I don't make posts on subjects "I know nothing about." Did you read my post? I have a commercial pilots license. All the things you listed are
minimum requirements. If they didn't have those hours, or a Boeing endorsment and WestJet let them fly, that would be
illegal. And yes, you do hire bush pilots, every airline does. Where do you think pilots aquire all these manditory flight hours?

Once again, all of those things are required by law. The only 'fact' in my original post was the news clipping I posted. The rest, I made very clear, I heard from people in the industry. Future airline pilots currently building hours as bush pilots, air ambulance pilots etc. These are folks whose opinions I respect, therefore I don't fly WestJet. That's my choice.

Interestingly, because you used to be a pilot everything you utter must be accompanied by a large dollop of truth, is that it? Sheesh! I hope you don't really think that for your own piece of mind.
Did you fly for AC, is that where the defense for this inept and coddled airline comes from?
Are you really suggesting that WJ does not adhere to the basic safety rules and regulations all airlines must conform with - the basic rules. To suggest otherwise is ludicrous as they are all investigated and inspected by the same federal inspection agency. And why would an airline expend any more dollars enhancing safety over and above the established minimum - just doesn't make cents does it?
So to suggest that WJ is able to circumvent is kinda. . . . well you know.
So what if they hire bush pilots?
A pilot is a pilot - they are a dime a dozen and happy to get work when and wherever they can. The north is inundated with pilots happy to fly just to maintain minimum hours to satisfy the flying hour requirement. This of course results in pilots who used to fly commercial but now flying bush, being called to fly commercial again - or in some instances, only having bush experience but being called and trained to fly commercial - you make it sound like they get yanked out of some flying crib.
Just keep your fingers crossed that the next time you fly, your friendly aeroplane pilot is not one who hasn't recovered from a real or imagined accident of some sort and spends most of his/her time venting with real and/or imagined friends/enemies/allies etc etc and so on and so forth on the internet . . .
for it is, has been, and will be stated again - whatever is written on these here fora or any fora for that matter - must be the truth and nothing but the truth so help me allah . . . . .

Wow. Really gone off the deep end now, huh?

No. I was never an airline pilot nor did I want to be one. The area of work I was interested in wasn't as routine/boring...
karra karra:

Nope. Did I say that? Show me where I said that. There are no regulations saying who you should hire, how much you should spend on a pilot...
karra karra:

Check out the link I posted. Air Canada opposed reducing the number of flight staff required. Don't get me wrong, I don't care for AC's service, they DID lose my luggage once. I would just rather have a well paid pilot in the cockpit.
karra karra:

Where did I say that was a bad thing? READ THE POSTS. What I had heard, is that they have no problems giving pilots a second chance so to speak...
karra karra:

Since 9-11, yes. Like I said, when WestJet was starting up I was hearing things about them. (That was when I was still flying) Pilots weren't so plentifull then. I wonder if that means their quality of staff has gone up, or if they've lowered their starting salaries so they can still get crew for bottom dollar...

he he This is the part where you really shine. A commercial license means you can accept money for flying services. 'Flying commercial' means everything from crop dusting and flying jumpers (parachuters) to flying airliners and learjets.
Oh, and once again, never said anything bad about bush pilots. Why does everybody keep talking like I had? Westjetsupporter was the first to do that...

Uh, just to clue you in, I have been flying since I was fifteen. I attended the number one ranked commercial flight school in western Canada. Canada has the number one ranked commercial pilots on earth. I attained the highest flight test mark that school had seen in its previouse seven years (scored just above average on the written). Like that?

That's really great stuff if I say so myself. . . . you are to be congratulated on your accomplishments for sure.

Jacques Cousteau[/align]
back to visit having spent some time avec my mates in Davey Jones' Locker, if you know what I mean.
In fact I was born Jacques-Yves in Saint-Andre-de-Dubzac, France, to Daniel and Elizabeth Cousteau on June 11, 1910. I always loved the water and in my early teens became interested in machines. At the age of 11, I built a model crane and at 13, built a battery-operated car. Also in my early teens, I became fascinated with films, saved my money and bought a home movie camera.
In high school, I became bored with school and began to cause trouble. As a result, my dear parents sent me to a strict boarding school. I excelled in this new environment and upon graduation entered the Ecole Navale (Naval Academy) in Brest. In 1933, I joined the French Navy as a gunnery officer. It was during this time that I began underwater explorations and began working on a breathing machine for longer dives.
In 1937, I married the beautiful Simone Melchoir, and we had two sons, Jean-Michel and Phillipe. Two years after their marriage, I fought for the cheese eating surrender monkeys in World War II. I spent time as a spy and was awarded several medals. During the war, I managed to still found time to continue my underwater work. In 1943, myself and French engineer Emile Gagnan perfected the aqualung, which allowed a diver to stay underwater for several hours. Divers used the aqualung to located and remove enemy mines after World War II.
I was named a capitaine de corvette of the French navy in 1948, and two years later became president of the French Oceanographic Campaigns. That same year, I purchased the ship Calypso to further my explorations. To finance my trips and increase public awareness of my undersea investigations, I produced numerous films and published many books. My films include The Silent World (1956) and World Without Sun (1966). Both won Academy Awards for best documentary. My books include The Living Sea (1963), Dolphins (1975), and Jacques Cousteau: The Ocean World (1985).
Because of my many projects, I retired from the French navy. In 1957, I became director of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, founded the Underseas Research Group at Toulon, and headed the Conshelf Saturation Dive Program. The Conshelf program was an experiment in which men lived and worked underwater for extended periods of time.
In 1968, I was asked to make a TV series. For the next 8 years, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau introduced the public to a world of sharks, whales, dolphins, sunken treasure, and coral reefs. In 1974, I started the Cousteau Society to protect ocean life. The membership of this non-profit group has grown to include more than 300,000 members worldwide. I was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Reagan in 1985 and in 1989, and was honored by France with membership in the French Academy.
On January 11, 1996 the Calypso sank in Singapore harbor. In my last years, I was involved in a legal battle with my son, Jean-Michael over the use of the Cousteau name. I passed away on June 25, 1997.
But as you can see, now I'm back. . . .
And now you have the moral of the fabel - if it's written here
well gosh!
Must be the truth yeah?
Robair @ Thu May 06, 2004 5:36 am
Is there something in particular that you think I'm lying about?
http://www.centennial.ca/courses.html
(A link to the flight school I was reffering to.)
ROFLMFAO
This is the funniest thing I've ever read on the net.
People are putting words into Robair's mouth
He started off telling everyone about what he has heard from his pilot friends and that this is why is chooses not to fly WJ, not once did he say anything he talked about was a fact about WJ and how they operate.
Then karra and WestJetsupporter jump all over him for stuff he didn't even say. Man this is good stuff
So thank you everyone for making me laugh today. especially you karra, without your extremely inmature comments about Jacques Cousteau I don't know how I would have made it through my long day.
BTW just in case you can't detect the sarcasm in that last bit karra, what you got on with was the most idiotic thing I've read in these forums so far (no offence) but it was way out there.
karra @ Thu May 06, 2004 6:03 pm
Wow, oh wow!
An ad hominem attack disguised as a veritable tsunami of love and all for little 'ol moi. . .
Je suis most impressed indeed.
Nice to see you defending the faith yet again as the ever faithful and loyal fartcatcher to Robair. Having just returned from walking my dog, oops I digress - back to the business at hand - and discovering to my complete and utter joy that once again I assisted someone much in need of assistance through their day - well, it just gives me this warm and fuzzy feeling all over and inside too - but on another note not altogether different from the song of the sirens - could you really be that non guy whatever his name is, the one who was too cheap to pay for an internet ordination or maybe his cheque bounced? Could that be you ron from the rock? Just wondering in case you're wondering why I am in fact wondering and also inquiring too.
Anyway ron rest assured on the rock, no offence taken nor intended, but you should know and be aware of the fact that I am likely the only person on these here fora tonight who has already sent their mother a truly superb mother's day card - already no less! Don't you think that speaks volumes as opposed to Mr. Melville writing about dick and not bending over for fear of le harpoon? By carp indeed I say!
Just remember this ye faithful fartcatcher - don't ever call me Ishmael.
Carry on romancing the rock or whatever it is yawl do o'er there. You're obviously a good man and it makes me quite happy and even a little excited to have contributed just this little bit to your pathetic existence, you poor dear.
A word of caution afore I depart this here page - continue to believe everything you read here - as I stated afore - if it is so written it therefore must be gospel - and that's the gospel according to a fully paid internet man/woman/whatever of the cloth. . . . so beware of false idols too - any questions whatsoever regarding any or all of the above (from you of course) should be addressed to moi. . . . as it wood so continue to please me no end to please you and assist in your endevors. . . .
Remember ron, no matter what anyone here or there or everywhere tells you - loyal fartcatchers and shineheads are truly hard to find - why they're almost noxious they're so hard to grasp I smells . . . .
Been washing your steroids down with anti-freeze again, Karra?
Holly crap, give me a break Karra
For someone who seems to hate this forum and the people who post here you sure to spend a lot of time posting jiberish

Farcatcher to Robair? I don't remember pledging allegiance to Robair. In fact I've probably only interacted with him directly on 2 or 3 other posts.
Where is this coming from?

I really have no idea what your talking about. Bounced check? to cheap to pay for Internet ordination? I think I'm either missing something here or you have me mistaken for someone else. Please ecplain WTF you're talking about
Damn, i didn't want get into a stupid quote game, I'd just like to know where all this crap came from

Don't remember?
That's alright, I've got it in writing.
Gotta wonder about her intentions, arguing with me on aviation would be like me arguing with her on how a gym should be run.
Insulting my flying abilities would be like me saying her flabby ass would do anything but inspire whilst flopping around in front of an arobics class.
I just
wouldn't say a thing like that...
Don't worry about it Ron, she's obviously venting at me personally.
Personal attacks and jibberish are all she knows, Ron. Her goal is to stifle any sort of discussion on every subject. Karra is a troll, Ronnie.
