So basically we have a commie city with a bunch of nazis running the police department. In this case I side with the commies. Seriously could we have a bigger disconnect between what the city government wants to happen to poor homeless people and what the Toronto police department are doing to undermine the will of the people? Exactly WHO signed off on this blatant abuse of human rights? Whoever authorized this horseshit needs to be fired and jailed ASAP. Whoever blindly went along with this horeshit needs to be fired for being an order following nazi. Complete and total horseshit from the word go. Zero excuse for this bullshit!

I don't think Rick knows what communism is.

Few points...

Most arrested were radical lefties attempting to block the cops.

All the homeless were offered inside accommodation and given the chance to leave prior.

Hundreds of fires at these camps in the past year.

Was going say that too. I’m a card carrying bleeding heart lefty, but I can totally understand the city’s position in clearing out the park. Where I live, two blocks away there’s a park that has the same issue. Homeless people camp there, make a mess, make trouble in the neighbourhood and then act aggrieved when the five-o shows up.

It’s a shitty situation all around and it’s a damned shame it has to come to this. But in the end parks are public spaces, not ersatz homeless camps where the rules of society don’t apply.

And I am a card carrying righty, but I have a major problem with the amount of force/violence that was displayed in this video. That first cop ripping the mask off of the black man and then swinging it towards his eyes. That man is poor and homeless. Is there a requirement to wear a mask indoors in Toronto at this time? I have spent several dollars each for a mask at a drug store. Several dollars might not mean much to you or I, but it could be several different meals for this homeless man. How is this man going to enter a business to purchase food without his mask? Ripping his mask off was a major dick move. What was the point in destroying this mans personal property that he needs to purchase food, use the restroom, etc.? Swinging a piece of cloth at the mans eyes at that speed could have permanently blinded him. That cop should be suspended without pay for several weeks. That was totally uncalled for.

All those people with locked arms being savagely pushed over like that. People could have cracked their skull on the ground and died. The crowd was not being violent. There was no reason to respond with such brute force. The police do not get to start beating the hell out of people just because the people are keeping them from their next donut break. Peaceful resistance has been around a long time. Governments overreacting to it brought down the British Empire in India. Government overreaction to nonviolent protesters ended segregation in the American south. Governments have had plenty of time to learn that lesson. It looks like the Toronto police department needs a little more time.

Do these people REALLY have a place to go? My city has some shelters with ridiculous hours. When I was on dayshift I had to be in by 7 AM. On my way in there would always be homeless begging for food that had been tossed out of the shelters at 5 AM. Why so early? Its not like these people have to be at work. Let them sleep in. Every single day they have to gather all their worldly possessions and move out. Why can't they stay longer? I have heard that they get searched before entering to make sure that they do not have any drugs or alcohol. Why WOULDN'T they have drugs or alcohol? They live on the fucking street. Their lives totally suck. I have a home and a great paying job and I still get fucked up every day of the week. Expecting them to not be using chemical substances is total bullshit!!! Lets give these people a REAL place to go. Let them stay every minute of every day. Quit making drugs and alcohol an absolute disqualifier to being in the shelter. Lets live in the real world. Drugs, alcohol, and homelessness go together like peanut butter and jelly. Perfect, infallible people are not showing up at shelters in droves.

Those are good points too. The cops were needlessly thuggish.

Same problem here in Victoria. Here, under the unquestionable leadership of mayor Lisa Helps, they decided to have the parks open to 24-7 camping for the homeless. They also bought several Hotels to home them as well. Meanwhile the rest of the municipalities did not open their parks to 24/7 squatting. The result were predictable to say the least.

1) homeless don't all come from here and proof of residence is transient at best. Ergo, the word got out free homes in Victoria just show up and they can't turn you away.

2) The mentality infirm and the criminal element who can not be housed without supervision soon took over the shanties that sprung up and dealt drugs and raped and attacked local business and property. The city transformed from a sleepy town of gardens to a criminal nightmare where you couldn't walk the streets. Even the garbage trucks had to be escorted by private security.

3) Those who would normally be in jail for minor offenses simply could not be held and were released to the parks and soon discovered as long as they didn't commit capitol crimes could get away with anything as the jails could not hold them.

End result was the city has be irrevocably changed as something had to give. There is no Federal or Provincial plan to deal with the people who think rules do no or can not apply to them and the municipalities are way out of there depth to deal with homeless.

This problem is happing all over the country and we have no real policy to deal with the mentally ill or low intensity but repeat offenders of the criminal code. This is by design as conservatives want NO plan and pretend it isn't their problem and the progressives time and time again advance plans to deal with it only to be gutted by the conservatives. This only forces outcomes like this. Truly preventable.

We need safe injection site, a credible federal mental health strategy and a criminal reform that focuses on rehab and a return to society and not punishment for punishment's sake.
