Huge sturgeon caught in Fraser

Talk about beginner's luck. On his first time fishing for sturgeon, Cyril Paquin caught one of the two biggest fish on record for the Fraser River. "This is the dream catch for every sturgeon angler," said Marc Laynes, the fishing guide on the boat that made the catch on Wednesday morning. The sturgeon they caught was about 3.4 metres long, and they estimate it weighed 360 kilograms and was 120 years old, he said. The biggest fish caught in the Fraser since records began in 1999 was also 3.4 metres, caught in 2003.

Yeah, well I caught a 4 inch white perch this weekend PDT_Armataz_01_27

That's crazy, though... how large is a normal sturgeon that you'd catch there?

Can you imagine living 120 years and then getting ripped onto land one day by some moron fishermen looking for a trophy?

Im not to much of a enviromentalist or whatever, but 120 years only to be hooked by a fuckin fisherman? That has got to suck some serious ass.

Ahh thank you.

The white sturgeon are prehistoric survivors, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs about 200 million years ago. They can live about 100 years and grow up to six metres in length.

In British Columbia, they were almost fished out a century ago, but their numbers have grown since then until 2004, when more than 60,000 white sturgeon were swimming between Chilliwack and the mouth of the Fraser.

But then the trend was reversed. Craig Orr of Watershed Watch Salmon Society said the same waterways now contain about 49,000 white sturgeon.

Sturgeon are the world's longest living fish.

Most of the sturgeon caught and released these days are 90 to 120 centimetres in length, with big ones up 270 centimetres long.

Orr said that 100 years ago, before it was overfished, the river contained monster sturgeons up to six metres long.

Still can't find a pic of yesterday's catch....

I did tuna fishing a long time ago, on a charter boat in Hawaii or Flordia....one of those two. Anyways, my brother caught this big ass tuna and the moron captian or his lacky couldnt even pull the damn fish in properly! It got away right at the boat! I couldnt beleive it. Would have made for some good pictures.

T'was a bitter sweet day.

The biggest tagged Sturgeon on the Fraser is a very close 3.45 meters (11'4"), caught in 2007 by Wade Gienow, http://www.bcfishtours.ca http://www.bcfishtours.ca/-Whale5.jpg

Though for some reason articles still mention the 2003 record as being the biggest.
