Ideally, I'd like to see the PCs get a slim majority (say 45-47 seats out of the 87) and get the scare of their lives and actually govern as PCs can govern and work for the entire province, not just parts of it (like Lougheed did). But I really doubt that wll happen.

I hope it would not be an imposition, but could you clarify the part I bolded? I was in diapers when Lougheed left office, hence I am curious.

EDIT: And look who decided to show up at the eleventh hour? Good grief.

IMHO, Lougheed was the best premier we've ever had (I wasn't alive in the SoCred days so I can't speak to them). He created the Heritage Trust Fund, worked on diversifying the economy, fought the NEP, etc. He generally tried to do what was best for all of Alberta as a whole, not for interest groups like rural voters or urban voters, etc.

Ah, I see. I mistakenly thought your previous statement implied Lougheed worked for only parts of the province.

My tale of voting booth woe:

I went into it having decided to vote for the Alberta Party. I don't know anything about these guys, and I don't want to know anything about these guys. All I know is that they're none of the four others which meant that they were going to get my vote just so I couldn't be existentially blamed for supporting the others. I also planned to vote for all three of the Tories on the Senate ballot, even though it means practically nothing. The one Tory, Mike Shaikh, is hardcore law-and-order (he apparently had some sort of position within the Calgary police commission or in the police union and that was more than good enough for me) so I feel no shame about voting for him. And, by not choosing any of their senate wannabes, I could at least feel somewhat good about giving the WRA the ol' raspberry.

Trouble is, after they gave me the ballot, the whole idea fell apart. The Senate thing went as planned. Turns out though that the Alberta Party isn't running a candidate in my riding. I almost panicked and felt physically sick in the booth. My choices got boiled down to:

a) voting for a Tory kleptocrat;
b) voting for a Dipper, whose party's policies I've been against my entire life;
c) voting for a Liberal, whose party is currently led by someone (Raj Sherman) who could quite possibly be genuinely mentally ill;
d) vote for a Wildroser, in particular a man so genuinely stupid that during the last session of the legislature he got up in the assembly and seriously compared an eminently sensible change in land-use regulations to the genocide of the Ukranians that Stalin perpetrated.

8O so what in the fuck am i gonna do here 8O

I'm not saying who I voted for. The damage is done and there's no way any of it can be repaired. All I can say for myself is that I came out of the voting booth feeling filthy, like I'd just done something incredibly awful and wrong, like I'd just made myself part of a crime. This whole election, and this day in particular, has been one of the worst moments of my entire life.

And regarding that Wildrose wave that too many are cheering on, here's something about waves in case no one's noticed. Waves don't clean. If they're big enough they do nothing but destroy everything in their path. And more often than not they dredge up a bunch of muck and filth and poison that deserved to be buried and forgotten in the darkness of the sediment. As in the ocean, so too in the petty and horrid world of politics.

Just simply an awful, awful day. :(

I'd say go have a beer, a joint, a hooker, or all three, but all those would make you feel ickier.

Looks likes it's a Ben and Jerry's and box of Kleenex night at the Thanos condo tonight! :P

If it makes you feel better, we'll have our own issues next year. Do I vote BC Conservative with the non-platforms, the Reform Party weenies in the background, and the party leader who looks like he should be in the Walking Dead, do I vote in the Lieberals and Clarke who's only fit for soccar mom posters, or perish the thought, the Dipper Adrian Dix is is.... well.... a Dix?

Ice cream and porn...... an interesting coping mechanism.

Unsound @ Mon Apr 23, 2012 6:02 pm

I kinda felt the same way Thanos. It was cool to see how busy the polling station was though, and to be a part of the first provincial election in my lifetime where I felt like my vote might actually make a difference. It's just too bad I'm still not sure if I did the right thing in the booth.

Hoping the Alberta party makes itself into something so that it's a more credible option next time.

Caelon @ Mon Apr 23, 2012 6:43 pm

As Thanos stated the deed is done. Usually I find myself voting for a party as the individuals will end up towing the party line. This time was different. Every party had items I could support and items that were distasteful. I ended calling the candidates to ask there position on several items and to see how they could handle the negative concerns. One candidate stood out so they got my vote today.

Time will tell if that was a good decision or not.

Of course in 4 years we get to try to make the right decision all over again. :lol:

Spoken like a true Tory! Just the fear mongering about 'waves'. Not the fact that the 'right size of waves' sure can be a lot of fun to ride! :lol:

But I didn't vote for the Tory kleptocrat. :|

There aren't enough hookers, blow, and beer in the world right now in numbers sufficient enough to soothe my shattered thoughts and broken heart. Worst. Election. EVER. :(

Can I officially put the banjo away for another 4 years Thanos? :lol:

Toro @ Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:03 pm

I have to be honest. I've paid absolutely no attention to this election. Heck, I didn't know it was on until I brought up my Globe and Mail app this afternoon.

However, I'm not surprised that she's running so close. I knew Allison Redford in university. She was very smart but she was definitely a Red Tory. Given that Alberta is essentially a one-party state, all sorts of politically ambitious people in Alberta wound up with the Tories regardless of ideology. I always thought if she grew up in Ontario, she would have been a liberal.

In the 90s, the Federal Tories made a tactical blunder by supporting Nancy Betkowski for the leadership after Getty resigned. She ticked all the right boxes to the Ottawa types. She was a woman. She was progressive. She was bilingual. And the Tory faithful rejected her. She went on to lead the Alberta Liberals. When I heard that Allison had won the nomination and became Premier, I had wondered if a similar fate was going to befall her.

CTV news forecasting a Tory majority again [B-o] They have at least 48 seats

Wow......looks like a pretty massive PC majority. Where the hell did that come from?

Who knows? Looks so far though like the wackadoos at the SUN and Wildrose Dave (your term, which is awesome BTW [B-o]) put the banjo-filled cart a couple of light years ahead of the horse.

Social conservatism scares the hell out of a lot of people, and not just the lefties too. WRA better learn from this if the so-cons end up being the main factor that cost them a win tonight. And it's not anti-religion either. It's more like a deep distrust and apprehension of any religion that gets too deeply fused with angry politics.

Cfox @ Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:16 pm

A lot of people in my area were pissed off that WRP used autodialers to call them for voting support. I didn't vote for them for just that as a start.

All along Thanos had a special ops unit lying in the wait, a small krack unit of rabid gnome libertarians and when he muttered the phrase "release the little krakens" this ensued at a unspecified polling station, all caught on helemt cam.
