I knew the risks when I voted, I'm curious to see if she can keep all her promises.

Orange you glad you called an election?

You're still going to end up with a sales tax.

2Cdo @ Wed May 06, 2015 4:55 am

I'll wait and see if she fucks up as badly as Rae did in Ontario before he decided he was a federal Liberal.

But I'll be perfectly honest, for the first time I'm actually worried about whether I'll have a job when I head back next month.

A government elected with less than 50% of the total vote? That's outrageous!

...is that still outrageous?

It's only outrageous when the 'other' party wins.

Good luck, Alberta. You're going to need it.

I wouldn't be worried. She might be 'NDP', but pretty much every party governs from the center once elected. I only hope when she 'reviews' oil royalties, that any changes are slow and gradual to the royalty regime. Companies won't mind slow change so much as change that they didn't plan for. A rise in royalty rates can be figured into future plans, but plans that are already in progress can't be amended. Not with oil this low, it will make too many projects unporfitable. As we've seen from companies like Statoil, they will walk away if it becomes unprofitable.

And if this election has shown anything, you don't piss off Albertans because you won't make the next election cycle.

And Mr. Prentice; if you want to know who is responsible for the situation, you only have to look in the mirror. Fucker.

DrCaleb @ Wed May 06, 2015 5:40 am

Oh, and did anyone else notice that Alberta, the second province with a woman Premier, now is the first to elect our second?

Notely is for Keystone, against Northern Gateway, which Prentice will tell you the Reformacons fucked up so badly, it's dead anyway. The recent response to the oil spill in Vancouver didn't help either.

She's also 'for' the Kinder Morgan expansion, and the Energy East pipeline - but wants refined product shipped, not bitumen.

Got a feeling the Albertans are going to have to do some more looking in the mirror as a govt of people who never expected to be elected starts to govern and there's no magic answers, no free lunches. Let the howling begin.

Prentice has just walked away from the whole deal even tho he was re-elected. Classy.

I'm sure the NDP will try to govern from the Alberta centre and not be a one hit wonder. For example Environmental Issues were listed under "Other Matters" in their platform.

If you listened to her victory speech, she was careful to send the message that Alberta is still open for business and that she wants to work together with the 'job creators' to expand markets and grow the economy.

Just like Harper, she knows she has to stay as close to the centre as possible or she'll be gone next time we vote.

That was the trick that PCs pulled off for 44 years - staying as close to the centre as possible while making it look like the progressives here were extreme - this time that message fell flat.

Yes, it is and is a failing of FPTP.

Still, I'm not going to hold my breath that we'll ever get rid of this antiquated voting system.

The funny thing is that Notley's comments on Northern Gateway are almost the same ones Prentice himself said last year.

I'll call it now, because a Dipper majority;

unless there is a constitutional issue, Alberta will get a PROVINCIAL SALES TAX before too long.

Which, they probably need anyway.

It's quite possible - what Prentice and the Wildrose always glossed over was that their economic guru - Jack Mintz called for one a couple years ago.

http://www.policyschool.ucalgary.ca/?q= ... -sales-tax

The one big benefit of a sales tax is that tourists also pay it, while income taxes are only paid by residents. I'd support a sales tax if they jacked up the income tax exemption to $57K like Mintz suggested, which would make it close to revenue-neutral.

My (Our!) riding had a 66% turnout. Better than most, but still kind of sad.

She and Prentice agreed on many things. The main difference is she respected Albertans, she didn't talk down to them like she was the only one who knew best.

There would be no point in doing it if it was revenue neutral.

Dippers will go through a lot of money, and in a lot of ways spending it twice for new projects,
and cancelling cuts will cost a lot, especially with the price of oil now, and it wont be going up anytime soon.

They will need to raise a lot of money, or watch borrowing in Alberta that will make
Harper's deficits look absolutely....

Conservative.

QBC @ Wed May 06, 2015 7:05 am

everyone has to remember, this is Alberta NDP. I sure don't believe they are as "left" as their counterparts around the country. One of the annalists from Global pointed out a lot in their plan that is far more conservative than NDP elsewhere. Now, if they keep with all other politicians, they've lied through their teeth and will be lining their own pockets starting today.
