no doubt. It would be nice!!

Ziggy - in the small towns the housing is just as costly. Take a look at the housing prices in Black Diamond, Nanton, High River, Okotoks. Houses are a lot of money.

High river yes but Nanton and further south isnt bad yet,my bud just bought a huge house there for cheap, there's allways Claresholm or Vulcan.

Three hills, trochu, you can get a nice house in town for about $80,000.
Should have bought in Strathmore a few years ago, that place is going nuts. :o

I agree, housing prices are insane in Calgary. We bought a 1200 sq ft townhouse condo spring of '05 for 180K. Moved in this past Jan. If we wanted to sell today, we could probably get 330K if not more.

For sure Hardly.. and you don't dare sell either. You never know what it's going to be like in a few years.

As weird as things are getting in Calgary I still feel we’re far better off than we were in Ottawa.

The amalgamation of Ottawa’s regional and municipal governments has been a monumental failure. Property taxes are way out of hand. Ontario Hydro doesn’t seem capable of keeping the lights on. Then there’s all the language nonsense. Now Ottawa City Council is hell bent on spending a billion dollars on a North-South Light Rail system when the majority of the city’s traffic runs East-West!

Calgary seems pretty sane in comparison.

hey Ziggy, Thanks for the info. I did actually learn a lot from reading on the website. I didnt know much about the oil rigs and stuff before. Now I know what exactly they do at the rigs and how the system works.

I have an engineering degree too but getting into that might be difficult as a new immigrant from USA so i might think of getting into the leasehand first and learn my way up. I havent scratched the surface yet, but soon i will know lill bit more than i know now.

Now, since I am doing the research, i will try to update u guys too.
Thanks again..

No arguments against Alberta outweight the agony of living in eastern Canada where all the job options are between retail and call centre positions that pay less then $10/hr and the cost of living is still quite high. Add to that the fact that half the jobs here require you to speak French which is ridiculous given that its hardly necessary for the vast majority of jobs. Companies don't seem to wanna compete for employees, which is why we're bleeding all our good people out west.

You can't bleed them fast enough for me. I think Ontario should institute a rule that you have to work in a tutu.

Exactly

apply the $14.00 to cost of livng and you got nothing . I love Alberta and would like to go back home but this Harper/Ottawa crap needs to start regulating a few things. Advise to blow the fucking shit out of our 30 million population and increase it to 100 million over night ....stop the land flipping realestate freak show and impossible land taxes . It shouldn't be worth more than the paper its printed on . Sure it would interfere with Volker Steven and infastructure roads, elctricity, sewage, and gas lines but holy crap ! enough is enough even the Queen doesn't seem to think Canada has ethics regarding the ability for canadians to prosper . People in Alberta shake their head constantly in disbelief at the insanity of deregulations . There should be a sign outside of the alberta borders which read . "BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU MOVE TO BECAUSE WELCOME TO CANADAS SILICONE VALLEY WHERE THE UNION WORKERS ARE FORCED TO EAT AT SOUP KITCHENS "

Hey-hey-hey, comrade...

Couldn't have said it better myself R=UP

What's always gotten me about this is that people here are perfectly willing to be "steamrolled-over" and always "drink-the-Kool-Aid" these rich scum dish out, when it's plain that the game is rigged, and the people are going to get screwed no matter what... Pardon the mixed metaphors but there it is...Like I said elsewhwere: there was another 70+ year one-party-state in recent memory, and as I recall, it didn't end well; absolutely I'm not a supporter there, but unlike the Alberta Fascists, the Sov's, at the very least put a roof over everyone's head, and saw to it that everyone had a job, and free healthcare. Free higher education, too, cool! More than you can say here, eh?

70+ years of crackpots, demagogues, wannabe-Republicans, and other lower life forms...and counting

Solidarity, fellow lefties...

union workers eating at soup kitchens? surely you jest.
Think I might go back to work in Oilberta, union or not,I can make pretty good coin, once you work around a bit and make some contacts then getting a good job isnt a problem unless your a slacker or expect big bucks for doing nothing.
Some easterners do comr to Alberta and cut their brothers throats on wages, seen that lots in a few provinces and they get taken advantage of because of it,hardly a surprise there.

I worked out of Nanton for a year, prices were not high, the guy I worked with bought one and it was pretty fancy for what he paid.Okotoks sure because its close to Calgary. I lived in many small towns in the motorhome and allways checked the rent and real estate prices because sometimes it was cheaper then pad rent at a campground and if you could turn it around when moving on to the next job, then it was a good deal. Some people should drive off the main highways and trans canada and hit the smaller highways that go through the small towns that are every ten miles, lots of cheap real estate and small town atmosphere to boot. Thing is to go rural, you might be surprised,I prefer a small town to something thats getting infested with city folk that cant afford a place in Calgary like high river is becoming,Nanton will be next because its a bit farther then high river, thats for sure, probably a good time to buy there right now, when high river gets too expensive,Nanton will boom.

Hey everyone. I was just checking out some websites and found this one. There seemed to be some pretty knowledgeable people in this thread so I decided to join up and ask em.

I'm currently switching careers (leaving the military) and I want to get a career in a trade. I've been planning on joining the union because I can not find any info on getting an apprenticeship without going through a union. Everyone/place I ask at tells me to just get a job and get a journeyman to apprentice me. Sounds easy but there seems to be no jobs out there for apprentices.

The union requires you to be a permit (pipefitters union anyways) for 90 days. I have no problem with that except their call out slips mostly seem to be for members only. The ones that are open for everyone only want 3rd or 4th yr apprentices.

The trade doesn't have to be pipefitter. Does anyone have any advice on where to look to get an apprenticeship.

I've also talked to a friend of the family who has worked on oil rigs for 14 years. He said this was a slow season and it might be hard to find a job right now.

My current plan is to do the trade exam at the pipefitters union and get my CSTS course through them aswell. I'm also going to get my H2S course within the next two weeks (just in case on job doesn't pan out). I'd rather get a trade before working on the rigs for a few reasons. I get a ticket out of it (although the family friend mentioned that some are trying to get working on the rigs turned into a trade itself). So I can work in town as I have a family (wife and two small children).

I am from Alberta (Edmonton - still here). I have worked in the industry before but it was on conveyor belts. That was for about 2 years or so. My dad was my boss (that's how I got that job). That job isn't exactly steady. My brother has been doing it for about 8 years and is now switching careers (that's one of the reasons). That job falls under the Millwright trade.

Just thought i'd ask for anyones advice. I see someone on the previous page saying they'd hook someone up with some info on getting a job in the patch but i'd rather get a trade first and they may not be offering that to new board members they don't know and the post is also about a year old. Anyways, thanks in advance for any advice anyone could throw at me.

Steve.
