In Canada Walleye are generally found in lakes, except of course in the spring when they spawn in the rivers. Their little cousins the Sauger are endemic in some river systems. I am not familiar with the habits of their European cousins the Zander, which I'm told may be found in your neck of the woods.

A river system naturally includes lakes. Lakes in western Canada that are not or are no longer a part of a river system tend to be too saline for Walleye.
Walleye spawn in flowing waters. So if anything they do "originate" in rivers. Some stay in the rivers and some migrate to lakes, only to migrate back to rivers to spawn.
Having fished Walleyes, Pike, and Perch in the three prairie provinces and in the Ft. McMurray area for the past 34 years I am well able to determine which is which.
There are virtually no Walleye in mountain streams. The Athabasca does indeed originate in the mountains and it's waters do eventually end up in the Beaufort Sea.
And none of this has anything to do with the gist of this thread.

Here are the pros: If you already own property, you can sell and move somewhere else with a big wad in your pocket.
If you like waiting for medical services, then the ER at the only hospital is the place for you. Most local doctors do not take new patients.

Daredevils will enjoy the drive to and from Edmonton. Especially on heavy traffic days. There is something strangely thrilling about narrowly avoiding being turned to paste by a logging truck in a blizzard while dodging crackheads doing 200 kmh.
If you need something from the store they'll order it for you.
There's a month's wait to get your vehicle into the shop for most things, so you can feel justified in buying the new monster truck you've always wanted.
The hunting is good, provided you can get far enough out there that there's some game left. The fishing is good, but the Walleye population in the only accessible local lake is collapsed. This will justify your purchase of a V8 powered jet boat to navigate the shallow rivers.

Fuc* the fort,if you really want a career change and want to go where it takes 24 hours to fly in and you can catch a 50 pound 100 year old lake trout with a head bigger then yours 50 feet from your tent at 3am and still get a tan then pm me.

Actually, Alberta is my home. It is where I chose to live. If anyone is qualified to comment on the actuality of life in Ft. McMurray it is I.
What I said about Ft. McMurray is truthful. Would you sooner hear lies? If so you can always listen to the media or your nearest Tory.
