Real estate in Alberta is just unreal right now. Not just calgary but every town within 3 hours of Calgary. Airdrie, Medicine Hat, Brooks, Canmore, Cochrane.
www.pissed.caNot really,Trochu, three hills,Elnora,I could go on and on.lots of cheap houses and NOT 3 hours from Calgary, more like 1 on a slow day.
nah ... Alberta is a shit hole for expensive fly by nighters . It used to be a good province where you could get a good deal on property but not anymore . doesn't matter how many hours you travel away from the major centers . You might find a 750 to 1000 sq foot trailer for 50k to 90k in the middle of nowhere but thats as good as it will get .Ralph is a fool hes going to let the province turn into major centers stuffed full of ghettos ie NY and Toronto . I think many people will lose everything they have in Alberta oops don't have to worry about that because 40 years in alberta and I've seen the results over the last decade and it doesn't look promising . Really I'm ashamed of what young first time homebuying familys are going through in Alberta . Two income families with a hopeful subsidy daycare plan in the works and they still struggle , union workers given their one way ticket out of where they grew up . What a fucked up province . Nope its not lawyers or doctors or upper paid proffesionals who have the nicest houses its the builders and realestate land/property flippers .
Just talked to a guy that has 2 acres bordering Todd creek and he want's to dump it for $40.000
Divorce tends to do that to a guy(dump all his assets)

Hello Ziggy!!!
New member today and your posts are informative. My husband and I are scanning the want ads in Alta. and are very intrigued. He has been driving heavy equipment( mostly grader ) and tractor trailer for 37 years and [B]VERY unhappy with his present employer. Don't really want to pay Alberta housing prices though and was wondering what you know about outfits that will fly guys out there from BC. for a 2 week tour. Also, how reasonable is it to work there for the spring to fall months only. Seems that is when most of the roadbuilding happens anyway. Are wages paid on experience? He is the best employee you could find. Not just saying that because I'm married to him, but he takes great pride in his work, is stable ( 2 jobs in 37 years), non drinker and non smoker. Would like to find him an employer that will pay him according to his experience and value and not treat him like dog#$%*()@! Lots of questions! No pressure! TIA

My link 3 posts above should take you to the Horizon site, their the ones that want to fly in workers from Cranbrook BC and other provinces.
The oilsands are steady work, cant say the same for the patch as your at the mercy of mother nature. Just do like most and get a nice trailer to camp in.Lot's of pipeline work coming up as soon as it dry's out a bit more.
Grader ops are in demand.Work untill the thaw(spring break)and then kick back for a few months.

Man will HE stand out like a sore thumb. Everyone smokes in Alberta - it's quite a shock coming from B.C. where no-one does.

I come from BC, everyone I work with smokes.
Hey Zig is the Horizon job the one north of the Bridge to nowhere and the Fire Bag road. North American put in a road a couple of years ago. Is the CNRL job off to the left on the Ft Mckay going yet? You seem like a "man about town"
just thought I would toss that one up.
My dad is the Regional Manager for Health Safety and Environment with North American lol
I was on the Bridge to Nowhere when it opened. Quite a day that was lol
Hey Ziggy, you been up to the Dunes by the Firebag River? Awesome.
Here in Edmonton its no better.. a townhouse in m y complex sold in Jan for 112,000.00 and we didnt have time to even look at it to buy... last week the same size etc in the same complex here sold for 165,000.00
I cant see me and the wife ever buying here now unless we win the 6/49 or something now... its totally nuts here

I always got a kick out of that bridge. (there used to be) great fishing there too. Don't know if I'd fish there now.
I love those dunes! You're in the middle of the Boreal Forest, suddenly you're in the middle of the friggen Sahara!
It's awesome eh?
There used to be some really nice scenery up there, but sadly the oilsands are eating it all up.
I'm really pissed off with all the development that's going on. Fort McMurray can't sustain the boom, it's going to crumble. We need more houses and more space and the stupid land all around the city is owned by the Crown and they're refusing to sell it off to the city for housing and schools. Morons.
Masta-F @ Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:43 pm
ziggy,
I beleive that you are right, Horizon now has the biggest private runway in Canada, flights are scheduled to leave China or some other Asian countries direct to Horizon projects on 767 and 747,
Watch for land to go on sale there sometime in the near future and a new city to be created to release the stress that has been put on Fort McM.
Masta-F @ Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:45 pm
bcrez, where are you based in BC, if Vancouver, Suncor has a Canadian North aircraft chartered that flies Vancouver / Fort McMurray twice a week, i beleive trhat you would have to live in Fort McMurray for some extent due to the fact that i beleive that aircraft is restricted for senior employees.

Yes, the sands are large but there is still plenty of scenery.

We are looking for work in the oil sands. We own two transports that we would like to put to work out there. Any one have any ideas where to start??
Or, just a normal driving job, if nobody hires trucks. Thanks for the help
