MrMarch MrMarch:
I'm originally from Fort McMurray. My parents have lived there for almost 30 years. My parents house was valued at about $190,000 in 1998.

They just sold it two months ago for $405,000. Insane no?

Bet they were smiling though.

My sister just sold her house for twice what she paid for it 2 yrs ago....the new one she is having built, which as of right now is still just a hole in the ground, has all ready gone up 50 k....welcome to Calgary....bring money...and lots of it.

In contrast to this I think of my aunt back home who just bought a fully furnished house in Rose Blanche for $4,000......i certainly know where Im gonna retire......and it aint Calgary.

Even if it did, most of what the oil companies get over that right now is all gravey. Horizon is still going to be built so obviously they will still make money or it wouldnt be recruiting. As the states try and switch from foriegn oil to ours the demand will still be there.

I would personally like to see a hit to the housing market, not the oil or business market in Alberta.

So in short, I would like to see more construction as far as homes, condos and apartments so average Canadians can get into an affordable home.

Also remember one thing,Alberta exports more gas then oil. Coalbed methane is a fairly new frontier and has barely been exploited yet.

Fort mac isnt the only player in the Alberta advantage.

Off topic question for you Ziggy (pls be serious)

With such a booming economy in Alberta there is obviously lots of competition.

How do you think most businesses are advertising to get business over competitors??

Well if it's products and services in the energy industry like pipelines and wells and everything that go's with it then I would say word of mouth first, contacts are everything, then satisfaction with the service or product and reputation, they kinda go together.

The people that do the best work get the most work and folks tend to stick with something that works,no one has the time to shop around anymore it seems.

Yes, however companies still advertise on TV, YellowPages and Radio.

Shop around, you mean herd mentality. Everyone follows the crowd like a bunch of zombies with no individuality. (Harperites  )

No serious, all companies advertise. Just what seems to be the best avenue now. Internet, TV, etc...

.

Indeed they were. Now that they are moving out of Fort McMurray, they can afford a much better house for two-thirds the price. My mom in particular is jumping up and down about a better house and the money they'll deposit into their savings :)

Richard, do you mean the Okanagan?

Housing is dirt cheap in Saskatchewan....but...then that pretty much described Saskatchewan. Cheap! Not much in the way of work there I don't think?

That was the refference to the pay and price in the Okanogan. He got a job there at a concrete place mid teens for wages.

Well I work in the patch so it's mostly word of mouth,no real herd mentality, just no time to go running around looking for a better price, time is money. you stick with the guy that did the best job and try and keep them working.
lots of Calgarians buy and read the Calgary sun or Herald, and listen to 770 am. Contacts are key though, the more you have the better.
