I am seriously looking at moving to Calgary, but need some advices and insights.

I am currently working in an IT outsourcing company in BC, and my husband works in a Casino. I am happy with my job but my husband is not, he is desperate in changing job. The problem is, his English is not good and he has no special skills.

I have heard Alberta's job marketing is booming and need all sorts of people... except IT. I also heard Alberta is not for visible minorities. I hope those are just rumors.

Will Calgary be a choice for my family? can I find a relatively stable job in IT field there? what kind of job my husband can expect? and what the family income will be?

I would like to know where you heard its not for visible minorities? Alberta is really no different from any other province.

Your wages and salary would most likely be better than BC the only thing you have to be wary about is the cost of housing , but than again BC can have higher housing costs than many places in Alberta .

   

I worked in a factory in Calgary, where as a white person I was the visible minority.

I’m not sure about IT jobs but keep in mind Calgary’s job market is in a bit of a down swing right now. I put an ad a year and a half ago for a secretary and had a whole 3 replies. The girl we hired had to quit because of family problems so I posted again in January of this year and ended up with 100 or so responses. A lot of the Oil companies are laying off right now and are downsizing. Cost of living here is fairly high too. Do some research on the cost of housing and other big ticket items like insurance and child care which is a bitch to find. Like a few of the posts listed above have all ready mentioned make damn sure you have a place to live here before you make any moves and if at all possible avoid moving to N.E. Calgary. As for the visable minority thing .. I don't know who's telling you that but it's a bunch of bs.

Finding a job won't be difficult, but finding a place to live might be.

I lived in Calgary for five years before I moved overseas and it's a fantastic city. My husband and I would move back to Calgary if the housing market ever slows down.

What I would suggest you do is take a trip there first, see if you like the city...have you been there before?

No, I have never been to Calgary before, we are planning to go and pay a visit this spring or summer, I hope the short trip can help me make final decisions.

btw, I believe the city I am living in has the highest housing price , you can't find a decent housing for <$800,000 in Vancouver. I kind of doubt house price in other city will surprise me anymore.

Housing will be a bargain in Calgary considering what you're paying.

well, I am not saying I can afford a house of that price, that is another reason I would love to move to an relatively affordable city.

What is the average house price in Calgary with a rental suite? maybe I can buy a house, rent it out, enjoy the life of being a landlord, and forget about the job hunting hassle

Calgary just lost 3 firemen. They loved the City but couldn't afford the cost of living and moved back to Manitoba.

   

I actually live in a suburb city of Vancouver, Surrey, 1 hour commute to Vancouver to work each way every day when weather is good. you can't find a decent house in Surrey for less than $500,000. for the houses build after 90s, you are looking at least $550,000 or above $600,000.
