Personally I think it's aload of crap, and if they are found to be in possession of a handgun without the proper paperwork(gunshow, law enforcement, legal sales, or a shooting competition)or have lied when asked about carrying a restricted firearm they should be banned from entering Canada for a period of time equivalent to a sentence they would receive for illegal possession in Canada, as well as lying to a law enforcement officer.

One must respect the laws of another country upon entering that country whether you agree with the law or not. Don't like it? Don't go there then.

If we had to remember not to cross to the USA with Kinder Eggs, I expect them not to come here with "illegal" guns.

There should be a sign at the Canadian border reading,'You have the right to bare arms in Canada, not to bear arms...learn the difference!'

I think that the law could be made to account for people that bring a firearm across the boarder without criminal intenet, and people that are smuggling weapons.
As part of the song and dance to cross the boarder, the agents should be asking 'do you have any firearms with you', and if the person says yes, take down the name and turn them around to go back home.

Do them a "cultural favour".
Just make them fill out a form and put the guns in a bag. Tell them it will be waiting at US customs when they go back home.

I don't think it's worth my money to put them up in jail for 3 years. Turn them around, no harm done.

I remember back in the 90's going to visit the inlaws in New Brunswick. I had several blowguns in the car,one for me and one for the brother in law. I had several hundred darts as well. The border gaurd asked if I had any weopons. I told him about the blowguns. They are primitive weopons,and I did not think they were a big deal. The gaurd informed me they were not legal in Canada. He confiscated the blowguns,and darts. He gave me a slip of paper stating that my property had been confiscated. He told me to bring the slip back when I left to reclaim my property when I left Canada. I had no problem with that. I feel that is how it should be handled. If people declare their weopons at the border, than confiscate them, with the chance to reclaim their property upon departure. If they lie about possessing weopons, than arrest them as smugglers. The fact is many jurisdictions have drastictly different laws about things. You should not become a criminal just for driving down the road, especially if you tell the truth to the border gaurd.

Or, show a little respect for the country you are visiting, research the laws, and leave them at home.
