The Commons defence committee is examining the 1998 purchase of the four diesel-electric submarines for $750 million. The subs have had a series of problems culminating in a deadly fire aboard HMCS Chicoutimi in October.
The cost for the program has risen to $900 million.
Initially, the federal government tried to work out an arrangement that would have seen part of the cost of the submarines offset in a barter for Britain's use of Canadian training facilities.
That part of the deal fell through, but it was part of then defence minister Art Eggleton's pitch to cabinet, which at the time was more focused on cutbacks and downsizing than large-scale purchases

the ad was stupid, but funny. any american dumb enough to take it for truth and fact is obviously inbread, and will continue to inbreed until their line becomes sterile, eliminating the problem.
I thought during this election the cons said they were commited to cutting taxes and beefing up the military and not paying down the dept, which I'm sure is what one of em said. Think it might have been my old MP john Duncan. I also recall that they blasted the liberals for high taxes, no military, and paying down the dept. now the cons are doing the same thing, except they are cutting social programs, adding on to the military buildup Martin already started, still charging high taxes, infact the lowest bracket was increased by half a percent, etc.
Of course they killed 1 % of the GST, however, to date, my househould, which has a net income of 100 000 a year, has saved only 122 dollars. if they cut income tax across the board by half a percent, we would be saving around 500 dollars, and it would have cost the government about the same as this first GST cut. with the 2% GST cut i fugure we might save 250 bucks next year, but thats still only half of the 500 we would save otherwise.
Kudo's to them building up the military even more though. Cutting funding for it by the liberals was a neccisary evil to create a surplus. And while the liberals started to increase spending while they were in power, it wasn't enough, and the tories today still arn't doing enough. They are buying about half as many planes as we need, and they are getting the wrong heavy tactical transport aircraft anyways. should have the antonov, not the boeing.
they should also be investing in more Main battle tanks, more troop transport, and a primary arctic force of atleast 5 ice strengthend frigates aswell as those icebreakers they promised us. Would also be nice to see those spy sattilites deployed.

Really? What social programs have been cut? As far as Martin beefing up the military? Not likely, ok he gave us a few leaky subs and promised to add 5000 troops. Woopee. A promise is nothing until its realized.
