Happy New Year, Avro.

I was wondering if you could help me with a legal experiment:

If you could stand on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls I was going to see what would happen if I shot you from across the border. It's a relatively easy shot so it would be safe for any bystanders.

Would it be a crime in Canada if I wasn't in Canada when I pulled the trigger?

And would it be a crime in the USA if no one in the USA died?

I was hoping you'd help me get some answers to these questions.

For anyone that’s ever played competitive sports (EA Hockey for the Playstation doesn’t count) they know that booing is a normal, emotional component of the athletic experience. Booing the Americans is perfectly fine (as long as it’s not during a national anthem) and while some may try desperately to politicize this, let’s not lose perspective here– it is, after all, a game. Treat it as such.

These kids are in the 16 to 18 year old range. Junior Hockey in Canada is the last stage before NHL draft.

   

I am not making threats. I am simply making observations.

At some point if the anti-Americanism yields a tide of anti-Canadianism then some pandering politician will inevitably exploit the ill-will for personal gain...just like your Liberals are currently exploiting anti-Americanism in Canada.

Do you honestly think that we will do nothing in the face of open hostility?

You surprise me that you would fall in step to fan the flames of cross-border discontent. It's not your usual style.

In any case, let's say that the Liberals stay in power in Canada and the Republicans retain the Congress and the White House in 2006 & 2008.

Relations will get worse.

The Liberals won't back off of their anti-Americanism as that may well get them re-elected.

If they get re-elected on the strength of how much they hate America and Bush then that will be used to get the Republicans re-elected down here.

Relations will not improve the way we're going is my point.

So far I have never heard anyone in the Bush Administration say anything negative about Canada while there is no end of your PM, MP's and Cabinet Ministers trashing on Bush and America.

I think the Bush people are hoping for Harper to win and usher in a new rappor between Ottawa and Washington.

But if the Liberals win there will be no reason for the Bush Adminstration to cooperate on much of anything with Canada.

And in just doing the math, we're 85% of your market and you're 20% of ours.

In any trade war you have the most to lose.

That's not a threat especially since I am in no position to affect any such threat.

It's just math.

I much prefer us being friends as opposed to seeing the two countries I care about going at it.

   

Yadda yadda yadda, it's not cross border discontent until it's blown out of proportion by people looking for that discontent to begin with.

These are a bunch of people watching teenagers playing hockey, and this incident is somehow a reflection on the direction socioeconomic relations between our countries are headed? Bullshit.

Nope, completely off the cuff.

On the upside for you I'll be away for a while as of tomorrow getting myself back into shape for an all-expenses paid vacation in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I will check in from time to time with my company laptop which has a satellite uplink (tres spiffy) and I'll send pix when I can.

By the way, when I take my first shot in action I'll be thinking about how much it'll piss you off.

   

Probably has alot to do with lack of discipline on the US teams part, I was not impressed with Johnson's cheap shot elbow on Downie, just as I watch the dying moments of the Bronze game Mueller from the US squad throws an even worse blind side elbow to the head of a Finnish player with the game out of hand. Young Chris Bourque made light of his opponents in a post game press conference after the US thrashed Norway 11-2 saying the game was a warm up for when they play the "good teams". I am also sure you all remember the US men's Olympic Hockey team busting up their accomodations at the Nagano Olympics after they had been eliminated and then not having the parts to step forward and admit who was responsible for it (Fucking supposed Pro's no less). I don't see many other nation's hockey programs carrying on in this matter. Not a swipe at the US, just an observation.

Robair, they are generally booing Johnson, they have not booed the anthem.
In the Bronze game today, I heard the majority of the crowd cheer the two US goals.

   

Having spent time in Afghanistan and having a good friend killed there, and another wounded, not to mention the thousands of troops being killed in Iraq, I am sure you are not making light of these places by terming it "a vacation".
