These are some Crime statistics tooken from NationMaster.com. The results were surprising to me, as I was not aware of how ugly some of Americas crime stats are. :(

UNITED STATES:
Crime > Assaults 2,238,480 [1st of 58]
Crime > Car thefts (per capita) 3.8795 per 1,000 people [9th of 55]
Crime > Murders 12,658 [6th of 63]
Crime > Murders (per capita) 0.042802 per 1,000 people [24th of 62]
Crime > Murders with firearms 8,259 [4th of 32]
Crime > Murders with firearms (per capita) 0.0279271 per 1,000 people [8th of 32]
Crime > Rapes 89,110 [1st of 66]
Crime > Rapes (per capita) 0.301318 per 1,000 people [9th of 65]
Crime > Total crimes 23,677,800 [1st of 61]
Crime > Total crimes (per capita) 80.0645 per 1,000 people [8th of 60]

Now here are the same categories, but with Canadian statistics.
CANADA:
Crime > Assaults 233,517 [6th of 58]
Crime > Car thefts (per capita) 4.88547 per 1,000 people [7th of 55]
Crime > Murders 489 [26th of 63]
Crime > Murders (per capita) 0.0149063 per 1,000 people [44th of 62]
Crime > Murders with firearms 165 [12th of 32]
Crime > Murders with firearms (per capita) 0.00502972 per 1,000 people [20th of 32]
Crime > Rapes 24,049 [3rd of 66]
Crime > Rapes (per capita) 0.733089 per 1,000 people [5th of 65]
Crime > Total crimes 2,476,520 [7th of 61]
Crime > Total crimes (per capita) 75.4921 per 1,000 people[12th of 60]

Notice that the United States ranks first in 3 different categories, while Canada has none. Some of the results are SLIGHTLY unfair towards the U.S, since the stats are based on population, and America has a larger population than Canada. Also it is fair to mention that the number of countries involved in the rankings varies for each category, and the U.S. (and most certainly Canadas) ranking would be different if every nation were involved in the stats.

But still, Canada does appear to be much safer :)

I believe that a ratio will allow us to properly compare Canada to the US.

Except for rape...

Since Canada passed its harsh gun control laws (among other things, outlawing most handguns) in 1995:
For the year 2003, Canada had 8,530 crimes per 100,000 (vs. 4,267 in the US). Of these, Canada had 958 violent crimes (vs. 523 in the US), and 4,275 property crimes (vs. 3,744 in the US). Canada is less safe than the US!
Toronto, once the safest large city in North America, now has more muggings, car thefts, and assaults per capita than New York City
Canada's overall crime rate is 50% higher than the US
60% of US states are safer than any Canadian province
crime has risen in six of Canada's provinces and seven of its ten largest cities.

I have pulled these stats from both Canadian web sites, and American sites

It would be nice if you could post your sources so we can verify. Ive found other sites that disagree with you.

Nevermind the fact that someone already posted a verifiable source...

Okay, I was actually directing my post at Manifest Density and his claim that the US is safer.

Well, here is a site with more or less the American stats that MD dug up, I don't know where he came up with those Canadian figures but MD is using the per 100,000 catagory instead of pulling out the overall total which, I must add is very high in the U.S. But then again, the U.S has ten times the population. Go figure.

Rezac shocks media with B.C. crime statistics

September 8, 2004

B.C. has a "worrisome" crime
rate, says Rezac

"The public needs to become aware of the crime problem we have in British Columbia," said Darcy Rezac, managing director of The Vancouver Board of Trade, to the Vancouver media today.

Rezac shocked several members of the media, including CKNW’s Jennifer Mather, by pointing out that Canada’s overall crime rate was twice that of the United States and that B.C.’s crime rate was almost three times that of the U.S.

"People here like to think of Canada as a kinder, gentler place, and that just isn’t the case," said Rezac, citing the British Columbia Progress Board’s Third Annual Benchmarking Report, which shows B.C.’s overall crime index per 100,000 as second only to the District of Columbia compared to all provinces and states in North America.

"The violent crime rate in B.C. is particularly worrisome," said Rezac. "Violent crime per 100,000 is more than twice as bad as the worst state in the U.S."

Pointing out that the U.S. was the destination for 80 per cent of Canadian exports, Rezac said that B.C.’s crime could negatively affect Canada’s trading relationship with the U.S. "Canada is dependent on the United States as a trading partner. The Board of Trade has been working for over 20 years to open up the border between our nations. Now, the United States is hiring more officers to protect the border from criminals in Canada."

When asked what we should do about the crime problem, Rezac said, "We need to ensure that the public knows about these numbers." He went on to say that once the public is made aware of how bad the crime problem is, then public pressure can be placed on politicians to ensure that our laws and sentencing guidelines are appropriate and that repeat offenders are kept off the streets.

Kinder gentler country my ass.

A Canadian source and another American one
http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/legal ... sdi=crimes
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_04/offenses ... index.html

MD is right to a degree that Canada has more crime per 100,000, his gross exaggeration of 50% crime rates higher than the U.S is complete bullshit when looking at the total overall statistics.

Just look at the supplied reference. NationMaster.com

Just two. One a smidge better the other alot worse.

Conclusion.
Crap.

Arctic_Menace @ Fri Dec 16, 2005 10:44 pm

Can't we just agree to say that both countries are unsafe? Or at the very least, that neither one is more safe than the other?

Mmmm..........Doritos............I'm having a party right now BTW. It's for the Majority Party of Canada. Too bad you're not here.

Istanbul @ Fri Dec 16, 2005 10:48 pm

Well more safes are used in the USA so it is safer.
