Dems win the House and Senate.
Dems win the House and Senate.
Canada has secretly adopted the United States as the 11th province.
1. raise the minimum wage
2. national health care system
3. new pension requirements (costs to employers, and new layoffs)
4. raising taxes (reduce spending power)
With the United States deficit the highest it has ever been in history, where do these Dems think they are going to get the money to pay for the new social programs.
Liberals Win = U.S. Economy Tanked (Canada economy will follow, of course)

Well i think you can probably look toward a repeal of the tax cuts to the richest percentile of the US population. The usual cut in pork barel projects.
but the US has a sever problem with its defecit, it will mean deep cuts in programs, probably will land on the wealthiest segment for the next couple of years.

Last night was a disaster. Can any of the dem-loving canadians or Americans explain to us the democrat's plan for iraq?
W.
The results are not in on the Senate yet and then there's also the issue of Lieberman making payback against the Dems. Even if the Dems get 50 seats it'll be a tie if Lieberman sides with the GOP and then Cheney, as President of the Senate, will suddenly have a more important job than he used to have.

The Dems are having a fight over whether the plan should be called "Surrender" or "Collaborate".

One plan which has been presented by Senator Biden(D), would call for the creation of three distinct provinces or states.
It would aim to grant a large degree of regional autonomy and a weak central government, whose main objective would be the distribution of oil wealth amoungst the regions, according to population.
The region would be divided to allow Kurdish, Sunni, and Shites, the ability to make their own decisions on local matters instead of having a strong central government which is dominated by the Shiites.
Of course, I think a referendum on the proposal would be neccesary in order for this to take place.
I believe much of the current violence is reaction by minority groups over shiite control of the government.
Do Americans have ridings like we do or how do you elect people down there? What was this election? What happened?

The U.S is divided into three legislative branches, excecutive, house of reps, and the senate. The house is made up of 435 seats , all of which were up for grabs, dems won the majority.
The senators are elected every 6 years, 1/3 of them are up for election every 2 years, so 33/100 were up for grabs. This is nearly deadlocked, and 2 seats are yet to be decided.
36 governerships were at stake, and Gop lost 6 with 2 still undecided.
legislation in the U.S. must pass both the house and the senate, after this, the Pres, has the right to VETO anything that passes.
In essence, what was lost, was the presidents, rubber stamp, which allowed him to pass almost any proposal through both the house and the senate.
Now concesions will have to be made in order for legislation to pass the house.
If the senate also falls, the President will be using his VETO power like it is going out of style.

Make no mistake, i am a right winger [ at least by Canuck standards]. but im well aware that governments often have a plethora of programs that make little or no sense. I cannot speak to much of american poltics, but in canada, the pork barel has been abused bot both the PC and liberals in Canada, but especially by the Liberals in the last 10 years.
How many of those devious little programs are currently being run out of the US house of Reps? The litany of republican scandals in the last two years vies with Liberals in Canada , Randy Cunningham, Tom Delay are only the most public examples of what goes on behind the scenes.
The election last night was not a call to the extreme left wing of the US Democratic Party, but a call to moderates from both Republicans and Democractics. And also a call for a clean and well though out government.
the fact is that the US, whether willingly or not spends far more money than it takes in in revenue. Its also seems clear that the middle class and low wage earners have lost ground as opposed to the wealthiest top percentile of the population in the US. I think you will see changes in that. I imagine there will be a middle class tax cut, a national minimum wage, and an attempted repeal of the past tax cuts to Massive businesses and the wealithiest percentage of the US population.
Things like this must be paid for, and to do that you will have to have spending cuts.
Here in Quebec, the Premier Jean Charest expressed his concerns about the US becoming more protectionnist with the democrats. It would hurt our economy a lot.

Quite true. The Dems are not at all enamoured of free trade if it sends union jobs overseas or across borders.
Also, Canada is now going to be the Conservative country on the receiving end of what appears to be a resurgent liberal government in the USA. Come 2008 the Dems may well control the US government.

From the coverage on the news, a lot of the "new democrats" are more moderate and even closer to right wings ideology.
