How does Canada have more freedom then America?
ManifestDestiny ManifestDestiny:
I do beleieve The USA is a force for good in the world. Look at what China and the Soviet Union did after the second world war.
Good point.

Which god? You really should identify the god you are asking to bless "western civilization". Should we just assume its zeus?
I think on a whole we have the same basic freedoms with the US. Bart Simpson has already entailed the loss of freedoms under the patriot act but does that lower the US basic freedom's below us? I don't think so.
God Bless Western Civilization.
It is nice that you are praying to Apollo, giver of life-giving light and heat.. Truly he is responsible for
blessing us with the warmth that sustains all life, including western civilization! Just make sure you also say a prayer to poseidon if you are going on a sea journey.

Communism is not as evil as its made out to be? WOW it does show that you are 13 year old that does not know his history.
Neither it seems do you. Look at the beginings of Communism (Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels) and look upon their teachings. Then move on the bastardization that Lenin started followed by Stalin. Communism became corrupt and initialy it wasn't supposed to be like that. All this was an attempt of the common working man to rise up from underneath the boot heel of powerful autocrats and the aristocracy. American Democracy of invading defensless country's hmmmm a bastardization of Democracy.
CAN A HEAR AN AMEN HALLELUJAH!!!!!
and please anwer my question, mister destiny.

Where can you find the most stabile part of the New world (north and south America) Thats the Untited States. So yes I think manifest destiny works if not The whole southwest would be part of a Mexican wasteland like there northern border is.
I don't think the US is the most stable. If it was, people in the north wouldn't cry terrorist everytime something bad happens. "Oh my god, a car on the side of the road on fire... TERRORIST!!!" <--- maby not that lame, but up here in Canada, no one really seems to give a damn that we will likely be attacked by terrorists in the next 1-2 years, it crosses our mind every once in a while, but we don't stop our everyday buisness because of it.

Don't froget Allah, otherwise you might be struck down by terrorists.

Really? Let's see any newspaper in Canada print the following sentence since they are so free:
"There was no Holocaust."
I'm not starting a Holocaust debate so don't go there, okay?
But if you have
freedom of the press then they are free to publish opinions as they see fit.
As distasteful as it is, America allows the publication of
anything that is not a National Secret or that constitutes child pornography. Everything else you can imagine has been published including opinions that advocate the violent overthrow of the government.
Try publishing that sentence above as a serious opinion
on this website and you could face charges in Canada.
I'll make the disclaimer that
I'm only using it as a point of debate and that I do not advocate that particular opinion as it is illegal in Canada.
And if Canada really had freedom of speech I would not need to do that, now would I?
DerbyX @ Fri Aug 26, 2005 8:20 am
Canada and US freedom is a give & take thing. They have more restrictions on some things then we do and vice versa. Do we have more basic freedoms then them, no. Simialily they don't have any more freedoms the we do when you get right down to it.

i don't think we'd see
"There was no Holocaust." in the headlines up here because no pbishing company is stupid enopugh to think that ther really was no holocaust. Same with several other titles that would be considered wrong unanimously by the public.

You won't see it in print because it is illegal to print it. It isn't in any of our major newspapers, either, but the odd hate rag that gets put out is not subject to
any legal action in this country for stating unpopular ideas.
And if the standard in Canada is measured by being "considered wrong unanimously by the public" then socialism, atheism, and separatism would have never been allowed to start in Canada.
Freedom of Speech means that the lone voice of anarchy is allowed to speak their peace no matter what 99.999999% of the public has to say.
I suppose we value Freedom of Speech in the USA more than in Canada because that freedom played so great a part in our liberty from the Crown. Canadians take their measure of freedom for granted while we have a collective memory of having to fight a war against the King to secure that freedom.

Maybe they made it illegal to keep stupid people from writing stupid shit, that would seem the logical reason. Freedom of Speech in moderation is a good thing. But what's NOT good is when every nut with a megaphone can stand on the corner of the sidewalk and start screaming out 'Convert or die!' or 'Make your penis 7" longer! No it's not a pill, its a salve!'

You could. People have, and I've yet to hear of them being charged with any crime.
Ernst Zundel.
Now you've heard of one.
DerbyX @ Fri Aug 26, 2005 9:27 am
I suppose the US has no laws about libel or slander?
lily lily:
Collective memory? Yet wasn't it an American about 100 years ago who said, "Your right to swing your arms ends where my nose begins"?
With freedom comes responsibility.
Of course. But we're talking about freedom of speech, not bar room brawls.
lily lily:
Fine example, except you said a person could be charged if they wrote it on this forum.
They can. I didn't say it has happened, but it can happen as it is the law in Canada. The decision to do something about it rests with a CP who may ignore it...or not depending on the circumstances.
I think our friend Saladin (where'd he go?) dances dangerously close to such trouble with his comments on the Jews.
DerbyX DerbyX:

We have
civil laws about libel and slander. If a news media outlet lies about you you can sue them for damages.
But we do not have
criminal penalties for libel and slander as has the UK - you can actually be jailed in the UK for libel and slander. I don't know if Canada has criminal penalties or not for these offences. Anybody care to weigh in on that one?
