When he sought the leadership of the Liberal Party, he was for it. But, like politicians we have known in this country, he looked at the polls, which indicate a majority of Canadians oppose joining with the U.S. in creating a defensive shield to shoot down incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Umm... WTF?

Isn't this what an elected REPRESENTIVE of the people is supposed to do? Listen to the peoeple. Not just go ahead with there own personal or party agenda's.

As far as flag waving and respect for the national anthem in Canada goes, i wish there was more of it. Americans are more proud and patriotic about their country than Canadians are. We also know what some, repeat, some of those highly patriotic individuals (and groups) think about those who are not American.

But back to the idea of the world turing on us, why exactly would they? Nothing has changed. We haven't been supported the US on some things, that is not new. We have supported others, that is not new. But for world opinion, many nations see the US as only looking out for themselves, that is not the case with Canada. We have taken part in the Kyoto Accord, did not take part in the invasion/liberation of Iraq, and we do not want the BMD system. All of those support the idea that Canada cares about the world beyond North America.

AmericanCentury2 @ Fri Mar 04, 2005 8:54 am

I think the American Government should quit looking at Canada like the government up there will always agree with us! Canadians are more European leaning in there politics..........Canadians identify with Europe.........Americans are more into our own culture as the end all be all!

I dont care what your Opinion is about America............Wer are not perfect but some of these arguments and the things that are said about the American government and the people of The United States is damn near pathetic and sad!

But hey what you expect!

Everyone wants to knock down the Champ!!!!

AmericanCentury2 @ Fri Mar 04, 2005 9:20 am

I like Canada but I hate that alot of your nationalism comes from bashing America.............We dont bash other nations to show our nationalism!

You guys stand out you are different ! You dont have to bash America to know that!

Oh brother  are you really this full of yourself?

I think he's probably serious about letting us sleep.See,the U.S.has had a few rather rowdy nights of drinking and smoking crack. We've been kicking over tables, starting fights, and fucking anything with a pulse...quoting Jesus the whole time we've been partying. Our designated driver,is an ex-drunk and coke-head,who,although supposedly sober now-still doesn't know how to drive. So leave us alone,we are trying to SLEEP this one off! Who knows, maybe we'll grow up someday, straighten ourselves out-and live a good life.Either that...or we'll just end up dying just another poor, lonely drunk.

Praise the Lord, and pass the pipe!

I think there used to be more patriotism in classrooms, in my classroom anyway. during elementry school we had a Canada flag in the classroom and sand O Canada every morning, alternating days between signing in english and french. I thought it was good, but they stopped doing it at my elementry school... why?

Specialy with all the immigrants, i think this should be done nationwide.

It's different down here Trev. You don't question the presiden because he's the president. They automatically get some kind of exhaulted status like royalty or something.

In Canada, the aditude is your the PM? You work for me the voter.

We had a wildly patriotic social studies teacher in highschool, and we sang the national anthem every morning from kindergarden to grade three... but I think those were more the teachers/staff at the local school.

xerxes @ Fri Mar 04, 2005 10:28 am

I think it differs from school to school, the levels of patriotism. At my elementary school we rarely sang the antherm. But at my high school, we sang the anthem and God Save the Queen (at least on Rememberance Day).

And furthermore, why is a pledge of allegiance so important? The US is the only country in the world where students have to say a loyalty pledge every day. See, I think the pledge is part of a minor brainwashing scheme in the US school system. If you have to pledge allegiance to the flag every day, then how can you question your countries actions and motives?

dgthe3 @ Fri Mar 04, 2005 10:32 am

In my old highschool, both students and teacher would be talking and walking around durring the anthem. In fact, it was becaue of a change that the vocal mucis teacher wanted to make that i decided to join up here.
