Canadian CEOs are at it again...
Fifteen years after the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and ten years after the North American Free Trade Agreement with the U.S. and Mexico, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (the CCCE, formerly the Business Council on National Issues) is lobbying the federal government to move beyond NAFTA toward deeper integration with the U.S.
The C.D. Howe Institute calls it the "Big Idea". The CCCE calls it "reinventing the border".
It should be called the "trading away our independence".
Canadian corporate interests are currently peddling ideas such as:
• A Common Security Perimeter and participation in the National Missile Defence program (initiatives that would place Canadian troops under U.S. command);
• A North American Identity Card;
• A customs union with the United States (with similar trade policies and a common front at international trade negotiations);
• A common currency with the U.S. (abandoning the Canadian dollar);
• Harmonization of regulations and standards;
• Immigration and refugee policies subjected to U.S. standards;
• The administration of water through a Continental Water Strategy (which would result in our loss of control over our water);
• The administration of energy through a Continental Energy Strategy (which would result in a similar loss of control over energy);
• A health care system opened up to the American private health care providers.
The Council of Canadians has made the issue of Canada-U.S. Relations a top priority for the upcoming months. This section will feature information related to what the corporate elite is calling "deep or continental integration", obscure terms that hide serious consequences for the future of our country.

well, looks like a few Canadian CEO's should get a whippin. I think people should find out just where these CEO's are actually from.

Canada91 @ Thu Jan 20, 2005 8:41 pm

if the CEOs even try it they can expect riots from the people. they're basically suggesting to get rid of canada as a country and become a state of the U.S.
personally i dont want to be american not because i hate them but i love my country and i dont want to give up my citizenship to a bunch of imperialist control-freaks who wont stop till they control the entire world *tear* :cry:

John Ralston Saul has described Canada as being "burdened by the laziest elite of any developed nation; people who have made their fortunes by selling off the country's resources and by working for more energetic foreigners. They are most comfortable on their knees, admiring those from larger countries who have purchased them".

Sounds to me like a good description of our CEOs... :x

Now now, there is no need to be going around getting help from other nations. I'll do it myself!

They are starting this shit to soon. there bullshit gun control hasn't taken all of our weapons away yet.

Streaker @ Sat Jan 22, 2005 3:24 pm

I don't want to oversimplify this, but what it boils down to is that Canada has a choice to make: Either we play an active and positive role in the family of nations or we shack up with a country which, rightly or wrongly, is increasingly perceived around the world as being the real "Evil Empire".

Dan74 @ Sun Jan 23, 2005 3:57 am

I like the North American ID card.
Save alot of bullshit at the border and it would work well both ways cause Canadian Border towns make a killing from American Tourists.
But the rest of the ideas should be burned.
