Toronto Thinks It's Canada's NYC

Every city has its share of wacky politicians. This thread is just an excuse to vent your Canadian penis envy.
And what is there about Toronto to be "envious" of exactly?
It doesn't have the style of Montreal, the scenery of Vancouver, the character of the Maritimes, or the independent, vigorous spirit of Calgary (the city of the future).
And that's just in Canada!
Compare it to other similar sized, truly world class cities around the world. Sydney, Milan, Chicago, San Francisco. All these places rate far higher on people's radar than Toronto.
Toronto is nothing more than a large, cold, reasonably safe, North American city.
If not for envy, why would someone go to such great lengths to prove one city better than another? It's just a city. Residents of each city don't have some genetic predisposition to be better than another's.
And what does "higher on people's radar" mean anyways?

No, but some cities are better than others by objective standards.

It means if you ask people in other parts of the world, you'll find that they have heard of Sydney, Milan, Chicago or San Francisco and have an impression of those cities in their minds. That's because those cities each have something that gives them a sense of identity on the world stage.
Toronto lacks that.
Mention Milan, people think "Fashion." Mention Sydney, people think "Beaches and a beautiful harbour". Mention Chicago, people think "Al Capone", and so on.
Mention Toronto, people think....nothing much.

That is a great approximation by.. uh... you. Was there any kind of formal survey conducted, by chance, or are you just making it up in the spot?
I would say Toronto would be quite well known, in all corners of the world. Why? Because people in Somalia, India, England, Portugal, China, Thailand, Philippines, etc, probably have at least one friend or relative who has immigrated to Toronto.
But I digress, because the purpose of a city is not to be famous or infamous in the world, the purpose is to provide it's citizens.
Every where I've been and I've told people I'm Canadian, the first question I always get back is: "Oh, are you from Toronto?"

That's because the world is ignorant and full of idiotic geographically-challenged dumbasses.
Not just the Yanks,
...

Alright, my city (DC) is at the top of the list!
Of course Toronto is a famous city! After all, it's Canada's capital!

You sound like my wife.
She is going for her citizenship test in 9 days, and I have to remind her that Ottawa is the capital of Canada, not Toronto.
But then what do you expect when a lot of people in Toronto think it is the centre of the world!!!!!

No. Actually, I came up with that after growing up in North York, travelling the world and doing the backpack thing, returning to Canada, joining the Canadian Army, travelling the world with them, then getting bored, moving to Australia, and living down there for a few years.

Really? Try backpacking buddy. Stay at a few hostels. I think you'll find Amsterdam, Sydney, Berlin, Paris, Marseilles, London, Rome, NYC, Australia's Gold Coast, California, etc are all far more popular amongst backpackers than Toronto.
Nobody's lining up to visit Toronto guy. Think about it.

And I guess you're right there. I live in the GTA. I lead a fairly decent life. But I'm not so pretentious as to believe that this place is worth writing home about. The housing prices are reasonable compared to other cities, and the crime rate's fairly low. The weather sucks, but my job allows me the whole month of February off, and I go somewhere warm for that.
But T.O. still sucks compared to most cool cities.

Why would they want to compare themself to an american city in the first place?
What the hell's so great about NY anyway? The Skyscrapers?
Let us look into this a bit further shall we..
This is Dubai,

Now THAT's a city!
In my humble opinion they should look as FAR away from america as possible.
Fuck Dubai. Qatar has it going because of this single project...

OPP @ Sat Apr 28, 2007 7:54 pm
Wohoohooo!
I'm going!
To hell with Rome! I'm saving up!
So hateful....
Toronto still has the largest Free-Standing Structure on the planet. Screw Dubai and Qatar and any other 5 letter long names for places no one has ever heard of with weird shaped crap and apparently, lots of money to spend...
Pwned,
