**UPDATE**

Since those server side php accelerators are unstable, i just finished my own speed tweak.

The entire front-page of CKA is now loaded from a static cached html file if the visitor is not logged in and the cached file is older than 2 minutes. This means that no php is used, and no accessing the database, so it will load way faster and lessen the strain on the server during busy times.

If a person is logged in or the cache is older than 2min, then the file is not loaded and the page loads normally. With a bit of code at the start and end of all the php code. to capture the contents of the page, then write it to that cached html file. Which will be used for the next 2 min.

If you loaded the front-page tonight between 12-1am you might have seen some pretty funky stuff. I had to put in some checks. For example I also cache the "news links" output to a file every 2min, so it was kinda doing it twice, it was really weird. So that’s fixed as well as some other issues.

The news links are always cached, for guests and logged in users. So if you submit a news link, that’s why it might not show up for 2min.

I am defiantly noticing more strain on my server and I feel the site is not as fast as it could be. So i hope to improve this in January. I have 2 rackservers, one I rent out to a client. They are selling there site then, so they will no longer need to rent it. And rather than find a new renter, I am just going to forgo the $100 a month that brings in and use that server for myself again.

I plan to offload most of the Canadaka.net Hosting Clients, cka sub sites, and other sites of mine to that server. Leaving just CKA and maybe Canadian Hottie on the main Dual Xeon Server.

I think and hope that should make a noticeable difference and pretty much has to be done, especially since Canadianhottie is growing a lot now.

What happened yesterday..? At around 10-11pm my time which would be..umm..1-2pm in Vancouver..I think??

All I got was the CKA logo in the middle of the page and a message saying MySQL was having some issues, "come back later"..
Something like that. I couldn't enter the site at all.

not sure, database server crashed. I think the site was down for about an hour. I wasn't home at the time.

Snorkmaiden @ Sat Nov 11, 2006 3:50 am

Okey dokey! I was just wondering! :D

Canadaka @ Fri Nov 17, 2006 4:54 am

sorry, site was down for 30-60 minutes in the am's today.

Was upgrading the PHP version on the server, and had some problems.

But its working now and PHP5.2 supposedly has some speed improvements among other things. Not sure if its something people will notice.

But they always change things each new release, and this is a major one, so its possible some things might be broken. So if you find anything not working, let me know!

I just tried to load the site and it wasn't loading for me, was this happening for anyone else today? might be something wrong with the update.. I restarted the web service and its fine now. All my other sites still loaded though...

wildrosegirl @ Fri Nov 17, 2006 9:44 am

Had trouble with it a few mins ago - kept getting a PHP error...working great now though.

Snorkmaiden @ Fri Nov 17, 2006 10:01 am

It's been working on and off for me. It's fine right now though.

I got this earlier:

PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 01E2D1E5
PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 77F47931

..if that's of any help to you....

Canadaka @ Fri Nov 17, 2006 10:04 am

yah it wasnt loading again for me, fuck. Looks like there is issues with the site and PHP5.2, it was fine late night when not too many ppl were on.

I aborted that and went back to the version that was working before.
that sucks.

Should be stable again though.
