We speak a bastardised version of the English spoken in Britain liberally interspersed with American English. There are also many words that nobody else uses much...things like toque and two-four.
In addition to all that there are the usual regionalisms...I'm currently looking for a chain hag for my truck. All a chain hag is, is a hook that attaches to your bumper to make securely attaching a chain easy. In a room full of people who know about trucks and chains the only one who knew what the hell I was talking about grew up near my grandfather's farm.
As a kind of side note...Our newscasters have an easy time getting work in the US because we speak a relatively unaccented version of English.

i can speak both, but i speak a dialact which is spoken near cologne (west-germany)!!

Everyone has an accent. We just don't notice it because its the way we talk.

That's true, Jinks...everyone does have an accent. Mine is a Saskatchewan accent with some Manitoban inflence. Ours newscasters are generally considered to have a neutral accent, meaning you can't tell where they are from. That's a huge leg up for guys like Peter Jennings.

According to my American husband I have a Canadian accent that gets more prominent when I talk to friends and family back home. I say ABOOT instead of ABOUT and EH and apparently my pronounciation of "O's" is different.....and I say it all with pride!

My American wife says the same thing about me, although I think she's the one that talks funny
We speak english and french, not american. And a chesterfield is a couch. Its a toque, not a hat

Yes...Americans DO talk funny! My husband is from Long Island and although his accent isn't thick he does add "r's" to words that end in "w". So "saw" becomes "sawr". Oh...and my personal favorite..."asked" somehow becomes "aksed". He denies it of course...but I know what I heard.
