If the CBC was sold, the cash strapped LPC would be Bug***ed.....What would they ever do without their tax-payer funded media arm? Who could they get to feed them questions in committee meetings?

The same that would happen to the Tories if the National Post ever went out of business.

CBC, unlike private broadcasters, has a mission to broadcast quality Canadian content. Other networks are required to have a certain amount, but they all try to get away with as much American programming as possible.

80% of CBC's programming is Canadian content. Moreover, even if the other two major networks have original programming, a lot of it has nothing to do with Canada at all. Sue Thomas F.B. Eye? WTF? That's what CTV is getting tax breaks to produce? CBC dramas and comedies aim to fictionalise life in Canada the way shows like the O.C. and 90210 did for Southern California.

What channel besides CBC is going to produce and broadcast a drama about life on an Alberta ranch (Heartland)? A comedy about quirky video game programmers in Vancouver (Jpod)? A dramedy about a pregnant girl from Toronto who just got dumped by the baby's father (Sophie)? A suspense about Canada Border Service agents fighting terrorism (The Border)? A drama about NHL hockey wives (MVP)? A sitcom about a small muslim community in small-town Saskatchewan (Little Mosque)? And that's just this season, and only the English language programming.

Radio-Canada, which is the same company as CBC, has equally interesting and authentically Canadian programming for French-Canadians. I'm currently watching one of their former shows called 'Les Invincibles' on DVD, and it's hilarious and creative.

What's more amazing is that CBC/SRC receives a yearly budget of $1 billion, and generates on its own another $500 million through advertising, and with that budget they are able to do everything they do in both languages. That's news, sports, drama, comedy, and cultural programming on television and radio in both official languages. I'm sure lots of people have lots to say about the CBC/SRC, but one thing that no one can say is that they are spendthrifts. They do a lot with what they have.

The all of two or three American programmes to be seen on CBC this season are only there to attract more viewers so that they might be persuaded to watch some of CBC's original programming.

As for the private broadcasters' original programming, there are a couple of honourable mentions. CTV's Corner Gas is funny and distinctly Canadian. Global's 'Da Kink in my Hair' is not half bad and is also distinctly Canadian.

However, these channels wouldn't produce such shows if they weren't required to. They would just purchase the Canadian rights to all the American shows, produce nothing, and sit back and collect all the advertising profits. That's not a very robust media.

If I didn't have cable, I wouldn't even be able to watch the private broadcasters because where I live, CBC Television is the only English-language network broadcast. Same for CBC radio. I'm sure it's the same story for many francophone communities outside of Quebec. Radio-Canada is their only access to quality French-language programming.

Frankly, I can accept not to see my tax dollars be wasted for the islamisation of Canada.

Fine! Let Queerbec pay for it or go back to Queerbec.
TROC needs it's own Bill 101....

westmanguy @ Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:18 pm

It needs to either be dissolved or completely reformed.

Why should Quebec pay so that Francophones in other provinces have access to Radio-Canada?

Are you actually suggesting that Little Mosque on the Prairie is a tool of Canadian islamisation? Or do you just have some sort of prejudice against Muslims? There are a lot of Muslims in Canada, so why shouldn't the Muslim-Canadian experience be fictionalised and presented to the public?

MacDonaill @ Sat Feb 16, 2008 8:44 am

I forgot to mention the great children's programming on CBC. It's the only uniquely Canadian children's content available on regular television.

bs.

When I was a kid I watched the following channels:

PBS Kids
ABC Saturday Morning Cartoons
The Family Channel
YTV

I never watched CBC Kids b/c it was so ridiculously pathetic.

Yes.

Muslims ? They all decide to what extent they follow their religion... I have meet some very nice Muslims, but they were nice 'cause they didn't care much about their religion (so basically they are cultural Muslims).

Now the fact that cool Muslims exist does not reduce my hostility towards Islam.

And now let's also have a Buddhist-Canadian, Hindu-Canadian, Sikh-Canadian, Scientologist-Canadian, Mormon-Canadian, Wicca-Canadian experience be fictionalised and presented to the public. Let's also have an episode where all these folks come together and dance hands-in-hands in a big circle around a fire of happiness and diversity. XD

Sorry I'm not a fan of multiculturalism.

You might have thought so, but there are plenty of people who don't. And in fact, a lot of CBC children's programming has been shown elsewhere in the world because of its quality. Doodlebops would be the latest CBC world success, but there have been others. The original Degrassi comes to mind, so does Under the Umbrella Tree.

PBS Kids - Good, but still foreign, not Canadian.
ABC - ditto.
The Family Channel and YTV are not regular television, they're cable channels and you have to pay for them.

So my point still stands. CBC is the only station on regular, rabbit-ear television offering Canadian parents quality Canadian children's programming. There's nothing wrong with kids watching kid programming from other countries, as long as they have the choice between Canadian and foreign programming to make. And without CBC, that choice would hardly even be there.

That's fine. You're entitled to dislike any group of people you want to I guess.

However, there are quite a lot of Muslims in Canada now, and they pay taxes and contribute to society and the CBC belongs to all Canadians, not just white Christians. I've heard claims of liberal bias, but do you really think that CBC has some hidden Islamist agenda? That seems a bit far fetched if you ask me.
