Should CBC television be dissolved?
MacDonaill MacDonaill:
I happen to like quite a lot of the CBC's programming. Just this season they have Jpod and The Border which I like a lot. Not to mention RMR and 22 Minutes.
The other broadcasters are profitable, but they don't have as a high a Canadian content requirement as the CBC, and they make most of their money from their American programming. It's relatively cheap for them to buy the Canadian rights to an American show. So they play it prime time, and watch the advertising dollars roll in.
I personally enjoy Canadian shows, whether on CBC, CTV or any other channel. So it's lucky for me that I have CBC.
Actually, there are quite a few good programs on CBC. The Border, Intellegence (over for the season) Little Mosque, JPOD, I am looking forward to the T.V. mini series form
The Englishman's Boywhich was a great novel. Lots to see on the CBC.
How did it go Ridenrain, what were your results

There is also reportedly a film version of Robertson Davies' novel
Fifth Business, which is such a great Canadian novel. I can't wait until they break that one out.

Thanks for that info, it was a great novel. I am sure tricks, also a big Robertson Davies fan will be looking forward to it as well.

You really are a shill for the CBC.
Ridenrain, you gonna take the challange?

Ok. I'm not getting this.
Are you accusing me of something?
The fact that the CBC is asking for 7 year funding shows that their worried that the CPC is going to cut their funding. Boo hoo. Start upholding the mandate, drop the political spin and stop competing with private industry and you'll do fine.

What a bunch of idiotic bullshit. They do uphold the mandate, there is no spin, and they HAVE to compete with private industry for advertising dollars to supplement their budget, without which they would not be able to uphold the mandate.
We have shown a number of examples where we believe that they have shown political bias and exceeded their mandate. As partial owners, we have just as much right to lobby for change and our criticisms are just as valid as you're gushing praise. Just because you don’t accept our objections doesn’t make them any less valid.
It is wrong for a crown corporation, funded by the government to compete in the same field with private industry.

Nice points. Personally, i like the CBC. In fact, i think it has legitimate value and I could care less what these Philistines who parrot other's editorials think anyway. Do I agree with all of its programming? No. Actually, some of its shows are downright pretentious, boring and arcane, but, i'm mature enough to understand that others find relevance, enlightenment and entertainment in it, so i'm more than happy to support its cultural offerings. It's really no different than a library system - its goal is to nourish cultural/intellectual/entertainment desires and in the grand scheme of things, it's benefits certainly outweigh its costs.

That's what crown corporations do! Should we get rid of Canada Post and the Bank of Canada too? Evidently you need to educate yourself on Canadian political traditions and its past applications.
How does the CBC news hour and the CTV news hour differ?
Indeed, the CBC is broadcast far and wide but in the cities, a private industry already covers that market. It's unfair competition.

Ok Rain, it all started with the thread "CBC television review may lead to showdown" You can look it up as you posted a number of times to it. The following refers to your getting your feathers up about a comment by the comedy lady Mary Walsh. It went something like this:
fifeboy fifeboy:
ridenrain ridenrain:
It's just the best example. Find me an example of a CBC comedian saying a similar thing against a Liberal.
Also recall that the CBC already admitted reporters feeding off topic "American style slander" questions to the "ethics" comission investigating Mulroney. Was that a coincidence? That's direct colusion between the national broadcaster and a political party. Is that acceptable to you?
CBC comedy night is on Fridays. Get yourself a six pack of your favorite brew, a packet of pretzels, a scorecard--(Lib, Con, NDP and Bloc) and check of the number of jokes about each. You being a natural born scientist may even want to set up a scale--say 1-5 to indicate the intensity of each joke. Do some simple stats on the results and report back. And by the way, when the comedy shows are over, watch and enjoy Jpod--its a hoot too. Just no political jokes.
I also sent the challange out to yetiboy, but didn't expect him to take it up! One could not expect him to allow his own observations to get in the way of his opinion.
fifeboy fifeboy:
Squatch, I offer you the one night challange, as per my offer to Mr. Ridenrain. Think of it as your very own "One Tonne Challange," with the side benefit of six bottles of your favorite brew. Betcha can't do it

So, I guess you didn't take the challange, perhaps because you didn't hear it. But now you have and I expect you will be brave enough to sit down on Friday night and suck it up.
i say keep the cbc as long as its making a profit. If it is losing money then fire the boss and hire one who will make money. If no one can make money with it then sell it.

What a refreshing post. Two points!

It is also wrong for a crown corporation, funded by the government, to attempt to shape the opinions of the public it serves. The CBC has a consistent and obvious anti-American, anti-market, anti-rural bias. I'm paying tax money to help finance an institution that attempts to indoctrinate the public with nationalist and social democratic ideas. You don't have to subsidize the National Post. Why should I have to pay for the goddamn CBC?
