Canada's Defining Moments
sasquatch2 sasquatch2:
Definning moments are defined as positive and negative.
Using Virgil's list as a template
$1:
1.Naming of the land by Cartier from Kanata (village) to Canada.
2.Battle of the Plains of Abraham
3.The War of 1812.
4.The completion of the railroad,
5.The hanging of Riel,
6.Vimy
7.Statue de Westminister
8.Bilingualisme,
9.Charter of Rights
10.The ongoing struggle to keep Quebec a part of the Nation.
$1:
I would make 1, 2,,3,4,6,7, as positive ones and
the rest as negative.
The cancelation of the Arrow was a growing pain---the reality of the futility of developing an expensive modern weapon system....Although it is blamed upon the Tories of the time--the LIBRANOs of the day had it on the block and CD Howe was swinging the axe.
IMHO, in recent history, Cretin's dysfunctional anti-americanism, post 911, does not define my Canada. My Canada was the private citizens who took our GUESTS, stranded airtravellors, from the airports and took them home. That's MY CANADA of which I am fiercely proud.
Oh good, dreg analysis. This belongs in the garbage heap from whence it came.
Oh...and the Arrow program may have given Howe "the shudders" but historically the buck stops with Diefenbaker.
Stay out of history, Hillbilly

Deny Deny Deny....you still rely on revisionist history...
...and confuse formal education with wisdom....
You assume too much but then school teachers do that---state financed know-it-alls...

Hold the phone Irene, you mean Diefenbaker didn't cancel the Arrow?!?!? Then who did, Hillbilly? The Bolsheviks? Instead of making up history, like an uneducated pleb, stay out of it as it saves me from constantly correcting your junk.
Sorry, wannabe, but each and every time you crap out your ahistorical nonsense, you demonstrate what piss poor genes coupled with trashcan educations get you - revisionist, conspiracy-driven, anti-intellectual trash. Get a clue.
And everytime you come on in this ignorance bile-spitting fashion you demonstrate to one and all that you are but an ignorant troll. Do you fearfully skulk about in real life---or are you blessed with an environment in which you can power-trip at will with little opposition--like a school-teacher. Go pet your dog maybe he loves you.

Oh great, projection, from the Hillbilly bigot. You're nothing but a wannabe, who's desperate for his dreg opinion to matter, but in history there's education, knowledge and objective fact, so you're promulgation of stupidity is quite transparent. Go cry somewhere else.

More projection, bigot? My life is great, rewarding and fun, but thanks for speculating! My only hang-up is a low tolerance of bigoted ignoramuses whose intellectual cowardice and hypopcracy is their only skill. Hey, that's you! Keep on Truckin.

Ah...lot's of people love me, and unlike your pitiful existence, their love doesn't come with a strange flu and cigarette stains.
Troll off.
I know I'm asking for trouble by bringing this one up but what about Health Care?

I cant believe the foundation of Québec in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain hasnt been mentionned yet.
Neither was the founding of Nova Scotia (nor the Vikings). So what? Why should you care what les englais think about Canada?
Brenda @ Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:34 pm

January 1, 1980 -- release date:

xerxes xerxes:
Not much to add to what's already been said.
Vimy Ridge especially. Right now I'm teaching the WW1 unit to a class of grade 11's and rest assured I'm spending quite a lot of time on it (perhaps too much time...)
Internationally, I would agree.
First time Canadian soldiers fought all together as a cohesive unit,
instead of being just lobbed in with British divisions.
Very important for 'separating' ourselves from the British,
and establishing ourselves as an independent country.
Recently finished reading Vimy by Pierre Burton, really good book.

Teach on xerxes, it is a very important part of our history,
and coming up on 100 years, with all the vets now gone..
Domestically, I would say the Repatriation of the Constitution, in 1982 I think.
