BartSimpson BartSimpson:
To me there are some defining moments in Canadian history:

1. When Canada rescued Americans from Iran in 1979.

2. When Canadians opened their homes to stranded American travelers in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

3. When CF-18's flew intercepts during the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

4. When my new neighbours in Oak Bay came by our new house to welcome us and one of them gave me a US flag for the flag pole and told me to be sure to fly it on July 4th.

5. When an unknown Canadian soldier enroute to Europe during WW1 shared a drink with my grandfather who was the purser on the Mauretania, something my grandfather remembered fondly until his death in 1968.

6. When the staff at Butchart Gardens let me and Mrs. Bart have some quiet time after hours in the Sunken Garden last year when she was recovering from chemotherapy.

7. When I had a conversation with the most charming young lady from Halifax at the Inner Harbour in Victoria in 2003.

8. The WW2 vet who bought me a drink at the OC at Esquimalt in 1994.

9. The kid who found and returned my wallet to me at the airport in Van.

10. Five years of good friends on this site. [B-o]

Cheers, ya Yankee bastard! :P [B-o]

This is a negative one, but when:
Canada is left out of the victory parade in Berlin 1945 one more....
Canada constantly being belittled in history texts because of never being mentioned.

They sure weren't left out of D-Day. Have a dear friend that waded ashore there.

The kindness accorded to us Indiana Yanks after 9/11.

sasquatch2 sasquatch2:
Definning moments are defined as positive and negative.
Using Virgil's list as a template
$1:
1.Naming of the land by Cartier from Kanata (village) to Canada.
2.Battle of the Plains of Abraham
3.The War of 1812.
4.The completion of the railroad,
5.The hanging of Riel,
6.Vimy
7.Statue de Westminister
8.Bilingualisme,
9.Charter of Rights
10.The ongoing struggle to keep Quebec a part of the Nation.
$1:
I would make 1, 2,,3,4,6,7, as positive ones and
the rest as negative.
The cancelation of the Arrow was a growing pain---the reality of the futility of developing an expensive modern weapon system....Although it is blamed upon the Tories of the time--the LIBRANOs of the day had it on the block and CD Howe was swinging the axe.
IMHO, in recent history, Cretin's dysfunctional anti-americanism, post 911, does not define my Canada. My Canada was the private citizens who took our GUESTS, stranded airtravellors, from the airports and took them home. That's MY CANADA of which I am fiercely proud.

sasquatch2 beat me to it. There are a number of things that were mentioned here that indeed are defining moments and show Canada proud but there is one event that wasn't publicized as much a it should have been. When 9-11 happened a number of American were forced to land in Canada as American airspace was for a while closed to civilian traffic. These Americans not knowing what to do found themselves across the border trying to figure what to do and how to get home. Many Canadians went to the airport picked up an American brought one of them home and fed them dinner let them sleep and plan how to get home by ground transportation.

This act of kindness was not as glorious as Vimy Ridge and may not be as profound as the discovery of Insulin but on a very human gut level elevated to us exactly what we think of when we hear the noun CANADA. It defined to all of us south of the border what a great nation Canada is. Nations can't choose which nation they border fortunately we don't have to (on the northern side anyway) we have by fate been given the bordering country that everyone would want to have C A N A D A.
