Avro Avro:
Well you see Vic, you only need a massive army when people are flying planes into your buildings. As you can see that is not happening in this fine country it is happening in yours so why blow countless amounts of tax dollars on something we don't need? Instead we provide health insurance for all our citizens regardless of income.....oh what bastards we are. Have a nice day and stay away from tall buildings and nuclear plants.

I found this to be quite under the belt and untrue, considering we had a massive army before people were flying planes into our buildings...

It's called an 'indirect subsidy' is what Canada receives from the USA in terms of defence. The doctrinal strategy of the Canadian military services in the event of an attack on Canada is to support the US military. That's not an opinion, it is simply the doctrine that the Canadian Forces publish.
If Canada were ever to go it alone then Canada would have to devote a disproportianate amount of GNP to defence as it is a rather small population defending a large country.
Remember it was only recently that Canada had NOTHING with which to answer Denmark when the Danes planted their flag on Canadian soil near to Greenland. Also, remember those fine used submarines that the Canadian Navy foolishly bought from the UK instead of spending real money on real submarines?
Yeah, how about if Canada foregoes some social benefits in order to afford submarines that won't kill Canadian sailors long before any enemy ever has a chance? Don't make fun of the USA when Canadian military policy is to depend on them because Canada can't even field a decent submarine or stave off an invasion by freaking Denmark.
