There is often much truth in humour....
MAO......
Catch up smart ass post since I've been a tad busy lately:
I never told people I had joined the Canadian Armed Forces or later the Canadian Forces. I always told them I joined the Army. The military needs to stop portraying itself as being "touchy-feely" It's insulting to those who serve and deceitful to those who are looking to join. You don't need to be blunt.
What I firmly believe and impressed upon others (especially the troops and Jr Offrs) was that they could count on me to sort their sorry ass out if they fu*ked up. Smart mouths in Jr Offrs can indicate arrogance which comes from an excess of self-confidence.
As for those troops who are there just to feed the family and pay the bills, that was always fine with me as long as they realized their obligations. If they performed at a reasonable level and could be relied upon, then no problem. Not everyone is an idealistic warrior monk.
Last point: When are the RSM's going to remember that they are pretty much bullet proof when it comes to PERs? It's not like they are going to get promoted any more. There is no pay raise after the final incentive. You still get to be a Capt if you join the dark side. And they can and should be able to put every soldier (officer or OR) below the CO in their place. They know what is wrong and they are not sorting it out effectively. I think that it is OK to wear your heart on your sleeve at that level. It shows people that you give a shit about them. This is not a blanket condemnation of all, because we all knew good ones, but by the same token, how many bad, or worse indifferent, ones have we known?
Agreed SApper (about paying the bills), but if you can believe it, there are guys who get visibly upset when they have to go on deployment (always the same candy asses who never go to the field, yet get the good courses at home while others soldier on overseas). One guy even came up with a reason not to deploy with us to Kosovo because it meant he would miss out on the Millenium New Years Party 2000, I mean are you a soldier or what???What I meant is many see the military as a great social services "club" with outstanding benifits rather than what we are really for, blame the government for that I would say, what ever happened to the "There's No Life Like it" commercials??? LMAO
As I said earlier we (JNCO's/NCO's) gotta start CRACKING Skulls. We have got to be able to discipline our troops without stepping over the line Push-Ups are not a form of crualty, and if you can't do 20 freekin push-ups then I should be able to make you hold that pos'n untill we are done. Then we will do another 20. These week bodied people can be made into soldiers but not if they don't get the preverbial ".50cal belt fed sand paper cock" every day at the least untill they are trades qualified. Make SOLDIERS not cannon fodder.

Sapper I agree with your point on the RSM's. Cause they really are BULLET PROOF, (PER wise).
I don't mean to come accross as a exteamy mean person in uniform but PT is a big part of being a Soldier. I feel that there is to much BS in the way of not being able to discipline troops. I'm not saying beat them up but some need the corective training. The CF has slacked off too much in the discipline area of training. To teach soldiering skills you must be able to make them work as a team, if that requires PT or Drill then we should be allowed to mould them into soldiers, in the ways that made canadian soldiers so reviered in every major confilct that we have been a part of.
So make them do fire and movement until the cows come home. A necessary skill to ensure survival on the battlefield. Now you're helping keep them alive and it's not seen as "pointless". Follow-up with tactical movement using field formations. If you are in the field already try conducting an unseen movement exercise. All these things are physically intensive and will also help shed some of that excess energy.
I never tried to use PT as a punishment because I wanted my troops to like it. If they liked it then they would want to do it. Simple, I know, but it did help. Drill was the same because I wanted that sense of pride in precision movements to come out. So why survivability exercises? Because I care! Which is what a good leader is supposed to do right?
IMHO, everyone in this line is 100% right on target. Knowing that we are all on the same page, I would like to pose this to you:
Knowing that basic soldier skills are paramount, and knowing their role and function on a battlefield should be ingrained into every soldier's head during basic and initial trade trg...What can we do with the air force right now? I see Pte's and Cpl's calling WO's by their first name. I see barely trained Pte's strutting around camp with dyed hair, earrings (males), wearing every imagineable form of dress at the same time! Where do you start to sort that shit out? When I have voiced my disgust over things, the upper echelon smiles, shakes their head and says "That's the air force for you. Things are different. Get used to it."
Chop, you sound as though I am talking into a mirror
No wonder we get along so well...Secret Agent Man
I guess you are Just another one of my Friends in Low Places, that's Too Bad!!
I was 18 when I got my first firsthand look at the power a dedicated RSM can wield.
This jackass colonel decided to have sunrise style parades (because he could)I was driving this jerk around and misunderstood what he meant by speak freely. I told him the parades were not in the best interest of the men(couple hour of rack per night). You Military guy scan figure the rest...left right left right
I was talking to the RSM about my impending doom and the reasons for it. The next parade a young fella next to me did a face plant smashning his nose and a couple of teeth.
You could hear the RSM's boots coming down the line and he took one look at that kid and went straight to the colonel there was an ass wooping like I had never scene and NO MORE PARADES.
I have the utmost respect for these gents.
I know a guy from Nfld. who is/was in the army..but I'm unsure what particular area....I know he was in Bosnia quite awhile back...anyway I could look this up?
Figured this was a good place to ask with all the "gunslingers" floating around!
P.S. Has anyone read "The Dark Tower" series?
Can't say that I have Read the Series. Are you looking for his unit or the tour he was a part of?
Sapper I agree with you but maybe I wrote it kinda awkward. What I was getting at was the unabillity to fail a recruite off of a recruite course cause they cant phyicaly do the job. I'm an artilleryman and we manhandle all towed howitzers around cause we have to. The C3 105mm howitzer weighs 2600Kg's, of course your not lifting the entire weight but it takes 6 strappin lads to effectivly manhandle a Gun. If you can't fail them they then become a safty hazard. Every time you manhandle a gun. I'm sure that you could make similar parrallels, bridge building takes a lot of strength, I know I have friends in 1CER & I've heard many a story. Or they can't keep up with the rest of the section on a section attack and is not making any extra effort to fix the problem. Yet these people still pass and they really shouldn't. That is just one of many points that gets me all mad about some of the BMQ's that are run these days. I could go on and on, but I'm not going to
