bootlegga bootlegga:
Even if every seat in Edmonton and Calgary went entirely Liberal/NDP/WRA, they still wouldn't form a government, as there are more rural seats in Alberta than urban (Edmonton and Calgary only comprise 41 out of 83 seats, despite having more than 2/3 of Alberta's population). Yet another relic of the past...
Good gravy, I knew there was a bias towards the rural, but I never knew it was so severe.
Anybody have a link to those stats?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta_ge ... l_Edmonton
45 seats for Edmonton and Calgary combined (83 seats total)
If you count on Wikipedia for Suburban/Central Caglary & Suburban/Central Edmonton thats what you get.
so its a slight majority bootlegga (for city seats)
As a further note on the bias towards rural ridings, Calgary North West is the most populous riding with 60515 people. The least populous ridings are Dunvegan Central Peace with 23645 and Lesser Slave Lake with 26940. Now, as it happens, these two lean ridings BORDER EACH OTHER! We could stick them together, and they STILL wouldn't be the most populous riding! If this isn't blatant stacking the deck, I don't know what is.

Count them yourself. It's not rocket science.

Sorry, no, there are 41 ridings covering the cities of Edmonton and Calgary. You fail at counting.

Calgary runs from 2 to 24; that's 23 ridings.
Edmonton runs from 25 to 42; that's 18 ridings.
23 + 18 = 41. Back to second grade yourself.
Now, in the interests of factual correctness, Edmonton is 730375 people and Calgary is 987905 people and Edmonton 730375 for a total of 1718280 while teh rest of Alberta is 1572080 people. So, the difference on Edmonton and Calgary alone is nowhere near 2/3 to 1/3. It's actually pretty even, if a tiny bit skewed.
Edmonton has a proportion of the population to exactly justify its 18 seats. Calgary is getting shortchanged to the tune of two seats - it should have 25. The rest of Alberta should have 40 as opposed to the 42 it already has.
So while Boot was in error on the magnitude of the problem, Calgary is, in fact, slightly underrepresented, Edmonton perfectly represented, and the rest of Alberta is overrepresented. See my post about Calgary North West, Dunvegan Central Peace and Lesser Slave Lake for dramatic proof of that.
By the by, this is my source of population numbers.

I didn't count suburban seats in either city (like Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, Aridrie, etc), as most of them are firmly in the PC corner and likely will be in this election.
For the record, I said URBAN seats, not SUBURBAN...looks like MTBR needs to head back to second grade for some reading practice.

Most of Edmonton is the "sticks"
mtbr mtbr:
No, they're not part of Edmonton. But Red Deer, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat aren't exactly rural either. Which city should we lump them onto?
The fact is that Edmonton and Calgary are large enough that they can be divided up into as many or as few ridings as are necessary to achieve a good representation by population. This has not been done in Calgary.
