even though ive lost a lot of respect for jack layton i will give him credit since i really believe his concern for the lives is genuine...unlike dion

so you think laytons being sincere but don't feel dion is being genuine , interesting comment.

is that because the liberals originally sent the troops there and are now changing there minds and layton has pretty much always been against this mission , so his opinion has stayed the same ?

even when it seemed justified to send troops to afghanistan if layton was in power he probably wouldnt have sent troops...hes a pacifist and with dion its different for that said reason...they originally sent them there in the 1st place

I second that, during WWII were we setting a deadline for the pullout of our troops? In Korea did we say we'd be gone by 1953 whether the fighting was over or not?

It will be nothing more than Canada turning its back on the Americans, British, and the Dutch, and I hope they tell us as much when we leave.

Someone needs to give the defeatists in this country a swift kick in the arse.

maybe the idea of set deadlines for this type of mission were a bad idea. there likely never should of been any deadlines in the first place.

more the kind of military operation a country gets into and takes day by day . then ends when the job is done not when the deadline is reached.

They could of at least waited until the names of the fallen came in first, instead of standing on the coffins of the soldiers trying to score points.

don't think Dion bothered to wait for the names , he was allready on parliament hill giving a news conference on this as soon as it happened.

instead of critising the mission he should of been supporting the troops and their families when they needed the support the most.

and the media was more concerned that these were canadian soliders killed than anything else. if an american solider is killed its not news here , they were just in it for the story.

All those soldiers die in vain if we pull out.

And having a deadline and political divides puts motivation in the enemy's mind that "all we have to do is hold off for a year or two and then we can reclaim all their progress"

Anyways I love Harper:

Families need 'clarion call' of support: military

Updated Thu. Jul. 5 2007 7:29 PM ET

Senior commanders at CFB Edmonton have called for quiet reflection on the recent deaths of six Canadian soldiers, rather than political debate on the mission. Four of the slain men were based in Edmonton.

"I would encourage all of you that at this point in time, that the focus must be on repatriating these valiant soldiers and ensuring their families hear a clarion call of love and support from Canada," said Col. Jon Vance.

"The families are well aware that there is debate on this mission. Nonetheless, at this particular point in time, the most sensitive and, I think, mature approach, would be to show them ... love and support. These soldiers died in a mission that they believed in, and saw progress occurring."

The military has identified the final two soldiers from the group of six killed Wednesday:

* Cpl. Jordan Anderson, 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton

* Capt. Jefferson Francis, 1 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, based in Shilo, Manitoba

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday that it was not appropriate to have an immediate debate about the mission in light of the recent deaths.

"Parliament has approved... (the mission) until February 2009, but obviously today is not the day to have a political debate on the future of the mission, we have the House of Commons for that," Harper told reporters at a press conference in Halifax.

"Today is a day to express our condolences for these soldiers, to their families, to their comrades but as well to emphasize the support that we all share as parliamentarians for the important work that they do on behalf of our country."

Continued: here

Its wrong to politicize the deaths of these soldiers.

I swore a few times when I opened the Winnipeg Free Press this morning and it said "Is it Time to Pull Out?"

We will always lose the wars if we set deadlines.

Not to mention I don't trust our Liberally biased media's coverage on the war.

I live 1 hour from CFB Shilo in Manitoba, and the troops their see progress and get sometimes angered because the political dissent at home is feuling the enemies abroad.

bush told Harper to no longer allow cameras( the press) to be at the airport showing bodies returning which is something bush had been doing for a long time.
bush told Harper to be like him and not go to ANY funerals of the dead soldiers

Harper agreed

I think that is being quite political

Since the beginning of Democracy the "troops" have been political fodder. Why expect change now?

Scrappy @ Thu Jul 05, 2007 6:12 pm

Because we now have instantanious newscasts, the internet, IPods and other tec stuff. The left and the Liberals are giving the radical Taliban a reason to attack us more often with their never ending: Let's re-evaluate the mission and Osma Layton with his pull the troops out and send them back unarmed and with a blue beret. The Taliban supporters in Canada pinch themselves with glee everytime those parties start with their media whoring for votes.

ridenrain @ Thu Jul 05, 2007 6:13 pm

You can't support someone without recognising and respecting the causes they fight for. Nor can you have an effective force on the ground if you yank them out whenever you get casualties.
Canada may be taking casualties but it's also because we are actually doing something other than hiding in rear areas like the rest of the NATO forces. Why else do you believe our foreign NATO members never give their oppinions on this toppis as freely as they do on all the others.

This is the worst form of political opportunism because it directly encorages the enemy to kill more of our countrymen.

myself i still don't understand why the press was so concerned about geting pictures of the caskets coming off planes. i myself have no interest in watching that and really don't understand why anyone else would.
the funeral is one thing and its important to show respect to them and their familes but why do we need to see the coffins ?

its not that the media has been lying its that everytime something happens they want to re-evaluate the entire mission . and do polls should the troops leave and stories ont he same topic everytime time . what does this accompolish ?

So silly.
I think if Harper were in Washington DC every Friday we would know about it.

Dont you?

I understand the context of that quote.

We have won if we can leave before the job is done, because we build the society up to supports it own self, so the Iraqis can finish the jobs themselves.
