How poetic.

Did you even read this article before you made your title? It is not 'being poor' that is illegal, it is passing out goods to homeless outside of designated areas. Much like leftists, homeless people cause a lot of problems; the vast majority are either drunks, drug addicts, or both, and they bother people. We used to put them into mental asylums until the liberals decidered that the mentally ill have the right to roam the streets. But fear not, my administrationment is tackling this problem. We are going to feed the homeless to mohamadian prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cubas. If there are any left overs, we have a plan to harvest their organs for Michael J. Fox.

Monsieur RLF, what is your solution to the problemo de homelessnessment?

Build them homes and put them in it, even at the taxpayers expense. Cut the military budget of our nations and use that money to sustain them. Encourge them to seek training or schooling, or to set up small home based businesses. Give them civil service jobs cleaning streets..anything to help them restore their dignity. It is shameful that in countires as rich as ours that people are going to bed hungry every night. It is morally wrong.

Fuck that. Then what's the motivation for kids to do well. "Well, if I drop out, the Government will give me a home".

You clearly have no idea how much Canada, Toronto especially, spends on the homeless. It's rediculous how much they spend for 8000 homeless in Toronto. You can throw tons of money at it, but you can't force people to do what they don't want to do nor can money cure stupidity and mistakes people have made.

If the threat of living in filth in the gutter is not a strong enough 'encouragement' for them to remain sober, employed, and provide for themselves, then it is doubtful that there is any such 'encouragement' that would work. After they have been given houses, what will motivate them to get employed? As for morality, there are myriad charities that provide for the very poor and homeless; we do not need government to act as an agent in this regard. Jesus said 'help the poor,' not 'help the poor via government.' But in that regard, what do YOU do to help the poor and homeless?

Hmmm?

Im curiouse what the Canadian govt. does, what kind of programs, etc...to help the homeless ? Greetings from California :)

The homeless are all moving to Calgary, hoping for another $400 gov't cheque for just being in the province. This is what they're doing: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story ... lgary.html

"A former Calgary [Brick] furniture store will become an emergency homeless shelter with 300 beds, city officials announced Friday.

...The clients will be pre-screened and will be bused in and out of the neighbourhood, he said.

...The province announced Friday that $1 million had been set aside for emergency care for Calgary's homeless. The City of Calgary has put up $500,000, but will ask the province to repay the cash."

It is not a crime to feed the homeless or stray animals.

You're welcome. Truth is, we're afraid of homeless people because we don't understand how they ended up on the street. It seems natural to assume that they did something really stupid or illegal.

That simply is not true. Well, maybe it is true for you, but not for me, or many others. The vast majority of homeless are DRUG ADDICTS AND DRUNKS, AND ARE USUALLY INSANE AS WELL. It is NOT a mystery! Further, there are people, usually young adults, who travel around America on trains like hobos from the depression! They actually chose this "lifestyle," and are considered 'homeless.' They think that it is fun and willfully choose to do this.

I think that you and people like you come to their conclusions using their feelings rather than their thoughts. I do not intend a slag; that is my honest opinion.

Piece be up on you,

W.

You have to be an Albertan for a year to get "Ralphbucks",plus you need an address.

They did a show on Calgarys homeless quite a few years ago and lots of people living in the dumpsters were high paid oil executives at one time(remember the NEP). It was a real eye opener to hear what some of these people had just a few years before things went bad for them. Nice house and family etc etc.

I'm basing my opinion on a news report from last night. There was an interview with a homeless guy. His wife died a few years ago and he became so depressed he lost everything - maybe because he did something stupid like quit work. He's 51, collects bottles for an income, sleeps outside and said that most people seem afraid of him when he tries to strike up a conversation. Perhaps people are only afraid that he will ask for something and they don't want to deal with it. I avoid dumster divers because I consider them unpredictable, unstable people - perhaps it's fear, perhaps caution.

There are also plenty of affluent "dumster diver" late teens that like the lifestyle for a few months, usually while attending school and trying to manage a tight budget. They get over romanticizing that lifestyle pretty quickly.

Two problems that well paid people have: gambling and cocaine, both of which end in dumpster diving lifestyles. I think these people fall into the stupid and illegal category. Lots of people hit hard times, but it is not the norm to end up on the streets.

Let's be clear in that Calgary's current homeless problem is caused by people from all over the country moving to Calgary with the hopes of getting $13 per hour at Tim Horton's and then finding out there is no where to live. The city is going nuts trying to keep the homeless alive in subzero weather because no one wants to trip over dead people on their way to high paid oil executive office jobs.
