‘Deployed out of frustration’: Charges stayed after judge rules Edmonton police broke own Taser policy

$1:
Charges against a man have been stayed after a judge ruled an Edmonton city police officer broke policy and used excessive force when he deployed a stun gun.

Cory Badger of Edmonton was charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling house and obstructing a peace officer after a June 11, 2021, incident at a house near Whyte Avenue and 110 Street.

Police were called before 7:30 a.m. that morning when the woman renting the house found a man on her back deck and told police he was refusing to leave.

Two officers arrived, and a foot chase ensued that ended when the unarmed man was zapped with a Taser multiple times before his arrest.

Alberta Provincial Court Judge Olugbenga Shoyele ordered the charges be stayed and ruled the officer broke city police policy by using the Taser five times against the fleeing Badger, calling it “unnecessary and unreasonable.”

“The constable’s use of the Taser, in the circumstances here, where there was no clear or real risk to officer safety, was a blatant contravention of the EPS (Edmonton Police Service) Procedure,” he wrote in the May 6 ruling.

How fucked up is this? The original death occurred in 2015. Within hours of finding the body the police issued a statement that the death was not suspicious. The police stated that the deceased was probably drunk, and rolled into the river. Probably drunk? They could not even be bothered to conduct an autopsy. Dead native? Lets go with the old drunk and rolled into the river explanation. That always works. You know them natives and their fire water. Thirty nine unsolved native murders. Holy fuck people there could be an active serial killer on the loose in Thunder bay. Stick to killing off natives and there won't be any investigations or autopsies performed, just the standard press release a couple of hours after finding the body.

So many things wrong with this story. Thirty nine unsolved deaths of natives for one. It sounds like no one is looking very hard for answers to me. No no let me rephrase that: it sounds like no one is looking at all. It sounds like absolutely ZERO effort is being made by this police department. It sounds like more effort is being put into the daily Timmies run than is being put into any investigation into these deaths. Second thing wrong with this story is that the death in this story happened in 2015. The report detailing deficiencies did not come out until 2018, almost three years later. Why so long to report the deficiencies? No one could have called bullshit back in 2015 when it was totally apparent to everyone that the police did not spend one second investigating anything? The report detailing deficiencies came out in 2018, why are they just now (four years later) getting around to doing something about it? This police department must be one of the most corrupt/inept departments in North America. Why aren't the feds taking over this investigation? Clearly this police department has zero business investigating itself. This department should be shut down. All employees fired, and prevented from ever working in law enforcement (in any capacity) ever again.

No shocker. Thunder bay is notorious for their 'justice' and the police have been teetering on the 'brink of collapse' for quite some time now.

Accused in Chinatown homicides was dropped off in Edmonton by RCMP 3 days before killings

$1:
Three days before two men were fatally beaten last month in Edmonton's Chinatown, a man now accused in both homicides was dropped off in the city by RCMP officers, CBC News has learned.

RCMP officers with the Parkland detachment dropped off Justin Bone in west Edmonton on May 15, even though bail conditions prohibited him from being in Edmonton unsupervised.

Edmonton Police Service officers spoke to Bone later the same day but didn't detain him because "no criminal offence was observed," EPS said in a statement Thursday.

Bone, 36, was arrested May 18 in the killings of 64-year-old Hung Trang and 61-year-old Ban Phuc Hoang.

He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Trang was beaten at an autobody shop and Hoang was assaulted inside his electronics store on the same street.

The killings have sparked outrage over high rates of crime in Chinatown and prompted calls to halt the release of incarcerated offenders into Edmonton's core.

I think that every cop should have to start the conversation by giving their rank, name, and badge number. They are the ones instigating the contact, so they should have to go first. This cop seems like a major power tripping dick.
