Canada's treatment of Native Indians.
PJB PJB:
The native profits are not used for addiction programs as the natives think that problem gambling is a provincial problem even if it is created by some of these same casinos..
Check your facts.
FNARF is the only First Nations run and funded addictions facility in Canada. (First Nations Addiction Rehabilitation Foundation) Look it up, it is in Saskatchewan and it is run with our gaming proceeds.
PJB PJB:
Native run casinos make profits for native bands, although here in Saskatchewan the province does take a percentage of the profits but these profits are used for the good of everyone living here including the natives.
You seem to know alot about where our casino profits go. Why don't you fill everyone in.
Please post in detail where the profits go.
(I'm going to send you $20.00 if you can get it right down to the band level)

I don't know shit about Natives, or life on the reserve. I do know this, when I pass a Native in the street, and say hello, he/she will always say hello back

HELLO!!!
(finally a positive thought)
Erinites Erinites:
Natives have always felt that things have been taken from them.
Perhaps this was so....
Thanks for telling me what I think.
UofSaskatchewan UofSaskatchewan:
All of that is true and I agree however many natives do not wish to do any of that, education and whatnot, statistics show many drop out. That being said they move into cities and create slums and crime areas, not saying all of them but some. It is ultimatly their choice on whether or not to pursue education and integrate with society as well as keeping their culture and customs however many natives also refuse to get over the past and blame the white man for any or all of their problems.
I'm not sure if you've ever read about Maslov's Hierarchy of Needs, but its pretty hard to get to school if you have nothing to eat, if your house is poisoning you and your parents are drunk/dysfunctional/abusive.
I'm sure the choices you are talking about are not applicable to the 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 year olds who are growing up like this.
I have yet to see a 7 year old pack his bags and head for the city for a better education and more opportunity (all by himself).
You make it sound so simple though.
Regina Regina:
Do they get free housing, monthy checks, pay no taxes, free transportation and lodging for medical services, etc. etc.etc. ???
Anyone in Canada has access to all of that if their on welfare.
Are you a racist or you just have something against Indians?

Donny...I am not sure exactly where the profits from the casinos go nor do I care. You stated that these casinos are creating jobs and don't seem to care about the health of these very employees. Money over health..Good business sense there.
I have no problem whatsoever with 99.9% of the natives living in this country but when that outher .1% starts screaming that they are entitled to everything and anything then I get offended.
Accountable? Most of us have been held to such high standards that many reserves simply do not have the manpower to comply.
The federal government and Indian Affairs went on a nassive campaign to demonize native administrations. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the National Post heartily joined in. Accountability and transparecy were the chants loudly heard all over.
This was preparation for and justifying a new legislative regime now being instituted by the Feds that takes us away from our treaty relationship. Those instances where there were corruption occurred under Indian Affairs monitoring. They could not keep track of things then how are they going to oversee the paper work and reports that have multiplied tenfold now.
Our own administration is totally tied up with doing reports for Indian Affairs, they have no time to do proactive planning. Also we are so hamstrung with a plethora of new regulations and reporting requirements that capital projects now cost us more to do. So money does not go as far and we also become less competitive as far as trying to build our economies.
I have no idea how anyone get away with mismanagement other than Indian Affairs cannot oversee what they have created.
By theway I agree those that are corrupt should be tarred and feathered, very ignoble for an Indian.

lily...Yes they do..When their entitlement has no merit whatsoever. When they think they are special because of who they are and not for what they have achieved. When they call me names merely out of disrespect.
UofSaskatchewan UofSaskatchewan:
Hey, you know how many land claims their are in Canada? It covers the whole area of Canada, so by your logic, natives should have allllll the land.Where are we to live?
I have a hard time believing you are in university.
Its simple, treaties were signed for all of the land area that Canada covers.
Land claims are for what First Nations were cheated out of after signing the treaty. In Saskatchewan Reserve land should cover 3% of the province. Reserve land today covers just 1.5% of Saskatchewan's land base.
Areas which have not been ceded by treaty technically still belong to the original inhabitants. This is not something that the Natives worked out, it is a Canadian law, based on the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which states Canada, nor anyone else can take the Natives land with out justly compensating them.
PJB @ Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:22 pm
Everyone is talking about accountability. Why is it that many bands cannot even be held accountable by their own people. I have read countless news articles about band members being turned away when they ask for band account information. This money is meant for programs for these very people and they cannot even see where the money is going.
PJB @ Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:25 pm
Donny..I think some folks are confused about the overlapping land claims. One cannot possibly say that all of Canada belonged to one group of people. These land claims as far as I see it are or were based on land entitlements based upon the population of the bands at the time of the signing of the treaty. The overlapping may occur when two or more specific bands claim the same portion of lands. Of course I could be wrong.
Regina Regina:
But what good is the land if you have no money to develop it. Hunting and trapping isn't a sustainable income to do it. I've seen many bands do extremely well like the Ft. William band and there are others like White Dog that will need decades to fix. Just giving them more land won't fix their problems.
I'd love to hear more about it. What do you think has caused the hopelessness and alcoholism?
That is the most intelligent thing you've said in this thread.
If this question is not answered by the time I get to the last post I'll answer it for you.

brandon, what are u talking about u can get a job anywhere in this city, cept jobs u need a degree for... other than that u can apply anywhere and get a job, whether it be from food services, department stores or even refing sports... brandon doesnt have enough people filling these jobs so dont say that u cant get a job in brandon...
Good point,
But why be opposed to Natives building a Casino if its going to mean people working and off welfare? Just because there are other jobs means we can't?
PJB PJB:
Personally I would love someone to pay my kids to get an education but that ain't gonna happen. I pay muncipal taxes so my kids can get an education and then I pay federal tax so native kids can get an education. Wonder how many people living on reserve are paying for my kids to go to school.
I wonder how many Native kids live in poverty because their great grandparents signed a deal with the Canadians which allow you to live where you do today?
I hear you crying about the Casino folks in Yorkton not keeping their end of the bargain...
I don't see how my inheritance of treaty rights is any different then the inheritance any other Canadian gets because of their lineage.
You live in one of the richest and greatest countries in the world. You pay for that privledge by honouring the treaties that your forefathers signed with mine.
