Cancel tax cuts, says lefty "think" tank
Robair Robair:
BartSimpson BartSimpson:
I see some interesting ideas about economics on this thread.
Government spending on infrastructure and education can rationally be called "investments" because such spending can yield immediate and future tax revenues. Government spending on social welfare programs is not an 'investment' as the money is spent subsidizing a person, province, group, or etc. and blah blah etc etc...
That's all well and good Bart, but you have failed to address one little thing:
Canada.
If you could show how your spiel on economics relates to Canada and its current economy, as well as the last decade or so (at least) of Canada's economic policy, that'd be swell.
We booted the Liberals just in time to stop a significant increase in social spending, I think (national babysitting). Or maybe booted them just a little too late (gun registry) But something Paul Martin and the Libs have been very good about over the past decade is paying down Canadas debt. Even in lean times. This has meant cuts to the millitary, and health care. Now that times are good, we should be addressing the neglected areas and paying down the debt. Once that is taken care of, we can cut taxes from whatever is left.
Robair, first, I am not referring to you as a
Usual Suspect. You're generally rational and intelligent and open minded even if it's to be open minded to non-left ideas.
There's my disclaimer!
Canada, to a marginally greater degree than the USA, has incrementally implemented socialism over the years and while your budget managers could be said to be doing a good job, I align myself more with BC Conservative MP Colin Mayes who once said that it was relatively easy for the Liberals to deliver balanced budgets as they were awash in revenues because of Canada's fortunate trade balance with the USA. Mayes' point is that they were getting more money than they had planned on spending.
In 1995 Canada gained US$18 billion in trade with the USA and in 2005 that figure was up to US$71 billion, or an increase of 394%.
Canadian government tax revenues on this trade actually increased a slightly disproportioate 420% with 2005 revenue on this figure (per NAFTA disclosures) of $US38 billion.
The figures do tend to support Mayes. Only a bunch of clowns could screw things up in these circumstances.
So, Canada's trade balance ballooned by 394%.
What did your paycheck do in the period 1995 to 2005? Hmmm?
In Ireland such circumstances have caused personal incomes to increase 88%.
Why is it that there has been no such growth in Canadian incomes?
Now, I will allow that with the stronger CDN$ you have more purchasing power...but exactly who is reaping the windfall from trade?
The Irish cut back on cradle-to-grave socialism and they cut government in general and now their people are on track to be the richest people in Europe by the end of this Fiscal Year in less than two months.
If your government will constantly stomp out your gains with regressive taxes then at some point this growth cycle will go bust instead of allowing Canada (and Canadians) to be in a position to develop these short term gains into a long term and permanent increase in both the Canadian presence in the global economy and the wallet of the average Canadian.
In short, if Canada opts to pursue socialism even more than before you will certainly snatch mediocrity or even poverty from the jaws of wealth.

But for guys with good benefits from their employers I highly doubt they understand......or care.
Those employers do, just ask GM.
The cost of doing business in Canada is lower, but the corperate tax rate is actually higher. What makes up the difference? Companys aren't shelling out for health insurance, that's a big one.
But that's besides the point... back to tax cuts. Anyone care to address my above posts?
I posted topics on this several times and they were ignored.....

No, they weren't.
You were ignored.
(Just kidding...I couldn't resist the setup!

I would like to see billions invested in education, health care and infastructure.
I also would like to see the corporate taxes reduced and implemetation of the Tobin tax but that's just me.

... and you have your wonderful lefty pinko Liberals to thank for that. Anyone who votes Liberal is a complete and utter idiot.
