It's just past 11am (Pacific) on Friday the 19th and I'm watching CBC Newsworld. Jack Layton was just railing Stephen Harper for not having any leadership qualities and that the government should put a meat inspector into every meat plant in Canada. When a reporter asks Mr. Layton how many inspectors would be required he just replies "I don't have those numbers." Ummmm...okay. Demand something in which you have no clue as to what you are demanding. Does this make any sense?
Jack Layton was then asked by reporters what would he bail out Canada's banks if a financial crisis happened here like in the United States. All he could say was that he wouldn't trust Stephen Harper to do anything to help. When pressed by another reporter for an answer all Mr. Layton would say was "Stephen Harper has shown he doesn't believe government has a role in the economy." Jack, nobody asked what Stephen Harper does or does not do. What would YOU do? What does this say about Jack Layton? Back when the NDP had Ed Broadbent I could respect them but Jack Layton is just a tool. All he does is protest anything the government (both Liberal and Conservative) does. After the NDP is obliterated in this election that party should replace Layton ASAP.
They don't need a plan yet. All they have to do is chip away at other parties support until they have a chance at winning an election.
Jack has no plan except to shut down development of Alberta's oilsands,he's not sure why yet.

Well, he certainly has a more coherent plan than Harper does. Harper's plan is to do nothing.
Economic crisis? "Nah, we'll just stand back."
Ecological crisis? "Won't do anything about that."
Tainted meat crisis. "We'll let the people packaging the tainted meat handle it. Our job as Conservatives is to make crude jokes."
Jesus, is Harper just lazy, or is he incompetent too?
And Layton is clueless and totally ignorant,at the end of the day....the better man is still running our country.
Layton's version will bankrupt Alberta and bail out an ailing auto industry where the worker's prolly feel their job's are like entitlements.
Welcome to the real world.
We have lot's of job's in Alberta when Ontarios auto sector tanks if the folks dont mind doing like we do and living out of a duffell bag or hotel room.
Lot's of Easterners dont mind and they dont mind the money they send home either.
Keep in mind that Jack has been the leader of a losing party for a very long time and all other parties have had leaders come and go. The one thing that Jack does very well is self promote. I recall seeing an interview with him and he mentiones that he and his political wife would play little games to come up with the perfect voice bite to sell a story or policy. They are very media savy and it shows or he would have been gone years ago. I used to joke about Svend, that any webcan, any where in the world will at some point in time, show him yacking the party line. Jack must have taught that to him because all cameras are jacks friend.
I really wish he'd leave the class war and union stupidity behind though.
Layton is the reason we ended up with a minority government ostensibly run by a bunch of right wing ideologues. He has delusions of grandeur and somehow thinks he will run the official minority. The guy is hopeless.
Jack is succesfully splitting the vote, for which we Tories are very greatful. Just keep chipping away at the Liberal vote base Jack!
As I have heard from some former members of the NDP it is an extremely disorganized group that does not really have any policy. All they really did in the meetings was bad mouth other parties. Oh well eventually the NDP will get dethroned by the green party for third place. NDP's voter base comes mostly from union factory work and other manual labour which is dieing in Canada. We are moving to a more information based age, and the green part will catch up soon. Not saying this is a good or bad thing, but is something that will most likely happen. I for one would prefer the green party to take over, I don;t like their conservative financial policies but i think they would be good for trying to push environmental bills in parliament once they gain enough power.
The NDP lost my vote this year for this exact reason - every pamphlet they mailed me (I'm in Olivia Chow's area and registered with her) had no proactive ideas... at all.
Every letter began with the exact same message "The Harper Government is...!"
I don't care, what about YOUR government? What kind of campaign plan has the head of their party mentioning the opposition in every sentence?
Have you not been following the election, Orpheus? The NDP have made major announcements on health care, job creation, the environment, child care and crime. They will be releasing their fully costed platform shortly.
If you don't agree with those policies it's one thing, but to claim that they don't exist is simply not true.
They are going after Harper because he has no plan. His policies are reactionary, and his spending is out of control...14% higher than any previous government...without showing any sign of a coherent plan for anything.
