SireJoe SireJoe:
Ok, so what your saying is that he wants everyone on the same page...thinking the same thing....voting...the same way.

So that when they talk to the press they all talk in unison....same words, same ideas....structure. Ya, I dont think we elected different MPs from different parts of the country to sit under harper to bend to his every whim. They have thier own minds, if they have differing views on what harper wants to do, then they should be openly allowed to speak it. The cons where all about free votes and open ideas on the SSM vote. Has that changed now that they are "in power"? Now they all must think his way?

Whatever, its all bullshit. All we can do is wait for them to sit down and see how far down we go :) Not that I am suggesting we will.....

I see where your going with this. Frankly, I think this idle prattle that the mussel will come off is naive wishful thinking, at least for this Parliament anyway. It may be that the next election things may be more 'relaxed' but I sincerely doubt it. Given a choice between upholding democratic principals of free and open debate or power the choice is clear.

Everything is hinging upon the hope that if the 5 priorities are addressed that will serve as a rite of passage that may affirm the reason for support in the minds of those who voted for them. With the opposition camp in clear disarray a majority may then be seized.

Given time there will be issues that may derail all the plans of mice and men. The longer this minority drags the more likely a wedge issue can erupt and weaken the odds of a future Harper majority but lamenting over the loss of colour that is domestic politics will not change anything.

Harper will bury the issue of SSM to his base by having a free vote and then ride the reaction to that vote whichever way the vote goes to the next election. Great way to shore up his base while keeping his promise and the vote will then be an unquestionable party policy as it will be the will of the people.

Rev_Blair Rev_Blair:
This isn't about the five priorities or staying on message. Send your closest CPC MP a question about abortion or Iraq or childcare or drug policy or taxes or Afghanistan or Kyoto child poverty or anything else and you'll get no answer. Same thing if you direct the question to a minister. Same thing if it goes right to Stevie himself. At least the Liberals had the decency to send out a completely inadequate form letter.

ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

It's funny because it's true. It is the key issue that separates the Liberals from the Tories. Some prefer the silence to debate and see it as pointless grandstanding. Clearly those issues are not Conservatives issues and the response you receive is apt. Not saying those issues shouldn't make their presence felt I just do not see the Conservatives as an ideal platform to support those ideas.

Perhaps the Liberals should update their letterhead?

Rev_Blair @ Sun Mar 19, 2006 7:15 am

Those are all real issues though, Scape. The press writes stories on them, charities collect money for them, and people want to know about them. The Conservatives are doing themselves no favours by not responding. In the end, it makes the inadequate form letter the Liberals send out seem positively informative.

Donny_Brasco @ Sun Mar 19, 2006 8:58 am

Having been elected by ten or twenty thousand voters this must be humiliating.

Having your leader not trust anyone enough to voice their opinion in public and create dialogue with the Canadian people seems a little backward for a democracy.

A good example of old fashioned conservative values “Shut up and tow the line”.

Harper is a great leader. He is the best man for the job, all you Liberals can kiss my ass. Talk about freedom of speach, if the people we voted into this government want full control over what they can say or not say then there is a choice to make: run with a party or independent. Its that easy. The Con. do not want its people to loss focus, nothing more, nothing less. Liberals stop fucking crying!!!!

Streaker @ Sat Mar 25, 2006 5:50 pm

Quite a feat he's pulled off, our prime minister...

Becoming leader of a party that championed democratic accountability and then running it in such an autocratic manner, all the while duping the faithful rank and file membership into believing that they are still reformers...

I want everybody to hear that voice, Scape. We should have mics attached to these people 24 hours a day. That'd end any hope they may harbour of winning the next election.

But I like the cowboy hat! If anything the MP from Wild Rose is the best chance to see what really is going on in the party. Far better than the party line talk your going to hear from New Glasgow.

David McGuinty looks to have the best shot at the Liberal leadership so the Liberals are at long last going through a generational change of leadership. A lively debate between reinvigorated parties would be best chance for democratic hopes in Canada. Although I understand the reasons behind the Harper muzzling of his own party, ultimately I do not want a party running the country that has to shepherd it's own elected members like sheep and end up having the holding the same views as sheep. We had enough of that under Jean. I strongly suspect I am not in the minority on this.
