Ignatieff would 'try' to form government if Harper loses....
Curtman Curtman:
When you talk about the minority of taxpaying voters deciding to overrule the majority, I'm afraid for our democracy.
Oh the drama

. I bet you didn't think that way when the Liberals had a majority governement for over 12 years even though they never once had more than 42% of the popular vote.

We were talking about the confidence of the house, not the popular vote. To give Harper the power that the Liberals had during that time frightens me much more than the minority rule that we've been through though.

Once again, "oh the drama". Ya it sure has been one harrowing rollercoaster ride over the last 6 years. We've seen some stupid shit pulled by both sides but nothing that will live on in infamy. In fact it's been pretty boring over all.

No it won't live on, because Harper never got the chance to put through S-10, or the corporate tax cuts, or the decision to spend money to convert the gun registry back to one that doesn't realize that a hacksaw can turn a shotgun into a handgun. Or the Fighter Jets that will blow the procurement budget for another decade.

Well, I'm sure most Canadians are shaking in their boots right now right along with you, which would explain why the Conservatives have crept even closer to a majority.
Oh and speaking about fear, why is it none of the opposition parties will address the coalition issue? Personally I think it’s because they know that what Canadians fear more than Harper is some half assed coalition that represents no one other than MP’s who have hatched it together.
And it’s funny you mention confidence, because this election was called on that very issue over a contempt of parliament motion. You tell me, what could show any greater contempt of parliament than the three opposition parties banding together to upsurp power from the legitimately elected party mere days after an election even after insisting throughout the whole campaign that they wouldn't consider doing so?

They're at the same place they were in 2008. Harper spent this campaign telling Canadians there would be a coalition, so Canadians are probably ready for it.
$1:
usurp : u·surp
to seize and hold (a position, office, power, etc.) by force or without legal right.
If a coalition can form a majority, it's not only legal, but it should be preferred to a minority rule.
I have no idea what is going to happen, but I hope for a Liberal/NDP coalition, even if the Liberals get a minority.

The only reason the opposition parties are avoiding the issue is because they afraid doing so would help Harper win a majority. If Canadians are so accepting of a coalition as you say they are then why avoid the issue?

The Liberals, even with the NDP rolled in, would still trail the CPC in MP's.
They'd have to get in bed with the Bloc, or it wouldn't work.
You know, just to restate my position, I don’t think coalitions are a bad thing. What I don’t agree with is using back door procedural bs to form one immediately after an election and I think most Canadians would agree with me on that.
If it is your intent to form a coalition then say so. People appreciate straight talk and I think if any party had enough sense to include a bit more honesty in their campaigns people might view them as a little more worthy of voting for.

I also having trouble recognizing the legitimacy of a coalition that includes Separatists.

I don't know Harper's scare tactics worked or not, but coalition governments are commonplace, and should be preferred to minority rule. I hope Harper uses the "losers cant form coalitions" line again, so he can explain to the Government of Israel why not.

Maybe the Liberals should try explaining why it would

. Wouldn't that make a bit more sense?

That's good too, I still believe if you can get separatists to support a federalist coalition, without any any position in the cabinet. That's a win for Canada.

It comes with a price, and likely one that is detrimental to the rest of the country.

I can't speak for The Liberal Party, I'm not even a member. I'm sure its for the same reason that Stephen Harper appointed more senators than any other Prime Minster, after campaigning that he would never ever appoint an unelected senator. But I won't speculate as to what that reason is.
