Liberals would consider rescinding GST cuts: Dion

Canadians react to mini-budget
GST among taxes being cut

OTTAWA - The minority Conservative government has survived a confidence vote on its tax-cutting mini-budget.

Opposition Liberals abstained from today's vote in the House of Commons, allowing the Tory measures to pass, 127-76.

The NDP and Bloc Quebecois opposed the mini-budget, which includes $60 billion in tax relief for Canadians and corporations over the next five years.

Among those measures is a single-point cut in the goods-and-services tax to five per cent, the second reduction to the GST since the Tories took office.

Before the vote, Liberal Leader Stephane Dion said a Liberal government could eventually rescind the Conservative cuts to the GST.

Dion said he favours personal income-tax cuts and agrees with economists that trimming the GST is bad economic policy.

He said he will consider including a repeal of the Tory cuts in the next Liberal election platform.

He noted that every percentage-point cut from the GST costs more than $6 billion annually in federal revenues - money which could be spent on personal income-tax cuts or government programs.

Economists generally agree that personal income-tax cuts are better for the economy.

Dion's decision to abstain from the confidence vote on Tuesday's mini-budget is the same move the Liberals used in response to the recent throne speech, and it ensured the minority government will live to fight another day.

The Conservatives cut the seven per cent GST by a single point last year and announced Tuesday they would cut it to five per cent, effective Jan. 1.

The other 17 threads on the budget and everyone's reactions to it aren't enough for you?

Yeah, but on several of the other threads, it's explained rather well what Dion means by it.

This is just smoke and mirrors.

well again dion is very clear by this , he is against cuting the gst and against the idea of canadians paying less tax .

Actually, I'm going to post a link to the full report and that appears not to be the case, just an assumption on your part. I dont blame you, you source is a poorly written piece with fragmented information.

Here ya go....I think the piece you might want to pay particular attention too is around paragraph eight...

if it was up to the liberals, we'd be waiting another 12 years for an ideal tax cut.

Paul Martin was going to cut corporate tax by $10 billion during his minority government but he had to swing a deal with the NDP so it got put off. If Martin had been elected to a majority instead of losing to the Harper minority a corporate tax cut would already be a done deal in the first budget, we'd be looking at personal income tax cuts by now but probably no GST cut.

Cutting the GST is all show with little logic behind it. Cut Income Taxes, Payroll Taxes, other Taxes and Fees first.

Cripes almighty. Cutting a consumtion tax when the dollar is already at a buck-0-five is going to do what? Why the hell couldn't they have cut INCOME TAX??? I know it was a promise but now was not the time. Inflation is all but certian to spike.

Here's a news flash folks: They did it because they said they would.

I know that might be a strange concept for some of you but it's just another example of setting the bar just a little higher.

They also promised not to tax income trusts and promised 3 ice breakers. They also made up that first GST cut by raising other taxes.

No, he ISN'T against Canadians paying less tax. This was explained so clearly on the other threads, I guess you had to start a new one in hopes that you could sway someone with your propaganda.

Nice try.

well if he is supposedly in favour of canadiands paying less tax then why doesn't he support the cut to the gst ?

the average canadian pays alot of GST in an average year on everything from electronics, gas , some foods and even major purchases like vehicles .
this tax cut will save them alot of money or the years , so if he's against this tax cut then he's in favour of canadians paying more tax and don't try to claim otherwise.
