The Canada Day incident was very offensive, and I don't mind mandatory service, but WITHOUT having the obligation to go to the front lines. In other words, helping in disaster zones, getting training, re-instilling respect in young people is all OK, but why would you send a bunch of wimps to get blown up by terrorists in Afghanistan? Not everyone is cut out to be a fighter. The people who want to defend our country, volunteer. Those that don't, have no intention to go to war, so getting them into a conflict is more of a hassle and pain in the a$$, than a benefit. Maybe have mandatory military service for domestic defense.
I think it's a great idea. Its something I've often thought about myself. I was gonna make a thread on this but did a quick search and here we go
Obviously not a popular idea but lets look at some of the pro's and con's of the idea.
Pro's
--------------
- Teaches discipline, teamwork & communication skills
- Educates & encourages healthy living (nutritional eating, staying fit etc..)
- Encourages higher education and skill development
- Could potentially lead to cheaper post-secondary costs for students who have served time in the military as the military offers a variety of programs that balance education and the forces.
Con's
--------------
- Expensive to set up and maintain
- Many citizens would be opposed to the idea of having to serve time. (What do we do with them? Jail them? -If so, our jails would fill up fairly quickly.)
I personally think it's a great idea, and I wish it were implemented. But I just don't see how it would happen. Works great for some countries (IE Finland).
Overall, if s*** happened, we'd be well prepared in terms of man power. Our youth would be well educated
How American ! feel sorry for any government that tries manditory service in Canada... is this a Harper idea?? if it is he will deninately be out on his ass in the next election..Quebec will never support this and neither will alot of other Provinces
Nope, I think it is a Dion idea. And, Quebec isn't planning on supporting him anyways, and neither will a lot of other provinces.
BTW, Kenmore, shame on you for implying that Quebec was a province, especially after all the effort they went through to be called a nation.
Oh yea, great idea. Take those street gang members, force them in the army, give them a good training.
When they come back they will be much more efficient with their guns. And they could even learn how to make bombs.
i have seen conscription in Slovakia, and its change over to an all volunteer force.
It's an interesting question for me.. as a young man, i did not enter the services.. my opinions, freedom etc. were too important.
Now passing 40, i recognize that it could have been a good idea to go.
everyone hopes the military instills some discipline, fitness habits, teamwork etc.
could have used some discipline back then..
I think people would like to see something that will make better citizens, and people who take pride in their country.
They see the military as one vehicle to get that done.
the proudest Canadians I have met are almost always from the military.
It could be done, it should be done, but it needs to be thought out properly and properly funded.
I vote yes.. i see now the benefits
Strangely enough, I've never thought this was a really bad idea.
in trying to provide these people with some "perspective" on what it is truly like to serve you would really just be eroding the quality and integrity of the Canadian Forces.
like I said aging...... there is a big difference between a nation and a country..... like the first nation people and the great nation of french speaking people Quebec....but still a province in Canada..
The reality is that in canada "compulsory military service" is really impossible to enforce in Quebec. Two world wars proved that......
We have enough problems with unity without dropping the conscription bomb.
Who dragged this sad old thread up when it died in the summer of 2006?
Yawn.
