I have never known 'combat arms' as part of the military.
It was CM's post for sure.

FWIW,

The Combat Arms are the fighting force of the Army. There are four. The Infantry, Armoured, Artillery and Combat Engineers.

I would fight this till the day I die before I allow it I would wage an endless political war against it till it died or I did I would not rest until every bit of hope of this ever being law was killed and burned to ashes not in my country I will not stand by and allow this shit.

I would go for some sort of mandatory national service ... not mandatory military service ... with the military being one of the options. I find the idea interesting because it would give the young a stake in the country to shift them from being mere consumers of public services to being contributing citizens.

As far as a military draft goes, that would water down the quality of soldier/sailor/airman severely when they have to deal with so many who do not wish to be there. History has shown over and over that unmotivated soldiers are lousy soldiers.

Ahhh necros....anyway, no thanks. Mandatory service means babysitting those who do not want to be there.

Necro aside, I do feel a mandatory national service might be useful. Does not have to be military, but spending a year in the boreal forest tree planting could help a lot of young idiots. Things like that.

Possibly. Problem is, if you take some unmotivated hump and give him a job that he's not motivated to do, not only is it a disservice to tax payers, but he/she tanks the morale of those around them. I get what you're saying, but mandatory service (military) is good if you want your population to have a baseline of military skills because there is a good chance you'll need them (see Israel) but mandatory military service to give the shitpumps in the country an asskicking is not what the military is for and frankly, not what the government is for with any program. I dislike the thought my tax dollars would be at work convincing little Johnnie or little Jane that being a lazy layabout shitiot is not good for them.

I suppose you are right, but I still like the idea of mandatory national service. However, if we ship all our lazy kids off to the tundra for two years of work, who will there be to give you crappy service at McDonald's?

Actually, in my experience, kids are looking for some "experience" to transport them from childhood to adulthood. Unfortunately, many of them feel that getting their drivers and then getting as drunk as possible is the road to adulthood. Perhaps living in discomfort in the bush will help them

Mandatory Military Service works in Israel but it would never work in Canada.

...not unless we found ourselves to be besieged like Israel is, some day ... an highly unlikely scenario. Even draftee Israelis have lots of motivation to serve, like noticing all of the missing relatives in their recent family trees.

Please put Stephen Harper on the front line of an active armed conflict.

That waa my point we are not in the same position as Israel. One of my friends I grew up with in Canada soon as she hit 18 she moved to Israel and joined the Military because she felt it was her duty.
