well its 7:42 where i live . so we should have results from the 2 ontario ( toronto ridings ) by 9 pm if i'm not mistaken .
unsure what time results for churchill river or vancouver quadra ridings will come in .

but i'm starting this discussion / thread now so i'm ready when they do start to come in .

anyways haven't been the most exciting by-elections , so oddly the results might be the most interesting part of them .

history of the 4 ridings

Toronto Centre - represented by Bill Graham liberal from 93-2007

Willowdale - represented by Jim Peterson liberal from 88 - 2007

Churchill River - represent by Gary Merartsy liberal from 06-2007
Jeremy Harrison conservative 04- 06
Rick Laiberte ndp , liberal , indepenent 97- 04

Vancouver Quadra - represented by Stephen Owen liberal 2000- 2007
Ted Mcwhinney liberal 93- 2000
John Turner liberal PM also held this seat prevously 84-93

Yeah they must have been pretty dull, the newspaper barely talked about them. I'm guessing they will all re-elect liberals. If we're lucky we won't get a member of the NDP.

ryan29 @ Mon Mar 17, 2008 5:10 pm

main candidates running in the by-elections

Vancouver Quadra
Joyce Murray Liberal ( former bc liberal mla , lost last election in new westminster coquiltlam )

By-elections are never meaningless when there's a minority government because they often represent a sample of what Canadians think. Or at least what the province thinks. The opposition will base itself on the results to decide when to overthrow the government.

Why so many threads and all the interest on what is basically a meaningless by-election?

there not meaningless as there will be 4 new mp's elected tonight . but there still interesting for people into politics .

but they are still in very liberal ridings so don't expect alot of change , well at the same time . it will be interetsing to see who wins them and by how close the numbers are .

but i wouldn't try to jump to conclusions because of tonights reuslts , no matter how many dion and liberals wins he will still not be prime minister and still be uncapable of speaking proper english .
and if the other parties win any its a loss for the liberals .

Oops, damn its 9:30 ET when the by-election show starts on CTV Newsnet.

Just like the last by-elections in Quebec! Even though they were more of a slap for the Bloc.

I'll go with the most recent polls, conservatives will stay stable in all those ridings.

Liberals might lose a point or two since the last elections.

NDP will win the points the liberals lost.

In the end the liberals won't lose any ridings.

Pretty much Lily, you're right.

Your other assessment in your previous post is also a good one. I agree they're often used as protest votes. However (Quebec example again) the Conservatives stole a riding from the Bloc at the last by-elections and liberals (not confident about this) lost one to the NDP I think.

i'd be surprised if they stayed the same , especially after all that david orchard troubles in saskatchewan .

what also will be interesting is % and if vote goes up or down for the various parties . and also interetsing to see what the green vote is and if that might be an indicator of what they might do come next election .
there is lots to watch for tonight other than just winners .

I don't think the Green party will go that far.

Actually let me rephrase that.

I hope the Green party will not go that far.
I don't want another party to breach in the federal government.

Italian politcs = bad!

well i don't think they will win anything tonight or anytime soon but it will still be interesting to see what % they get and if that continues

in other news the cbc news is on , and they continued with there by-e;ection coverage and feel the 3 urban ones are safe liberal seats and only the saskachewan one is vulnerable .

guess we find out soon , think some liberals mp's are being a little arrogant about there chances tonight . i think predicting wins themself in all 4 might be a little risky . as usually by-elections get split between parties , sweeps are rare are have not happened too often .

So. If the Cons win - yay Harper!

If the Libs win - status quo.

If the Cons lose... well, they're Lib ridings anyway.

if the libs lose - huge loss and slap for Dion!

Do I have that right?

simplified version......four new pi.......politicians at the public trough, doing SFA, except lining their pockets.
