ontario electoral reform referendum
ryan29 @ Fri Aug 03, 2007 9:28 am
not sure if everyone is aware but this fall on the same day as the ontaro election there is also a referendum on purposed changes to the way mpp's are elected.
feel free to comment on this even if your not from ontario i'd like to know what other people think of this idea.
myself i looked at it and don't like it simply because it would likely lead us to elected constent minority governments for years and i'm not sure why we need any more mpp's .
for full details check out elections ontario website

How does Mixed Member Proportional work? Part 1
If this system is accepted, Ontarians will have two votes in future elections: one for a ‘Local Member’ and one for a political party.
The provincial legislature would have 129 seats: Local Members’ would fill 90 seats while ‘List Members’ would fill 39 seats.
The political party with the largest number of seats in the legislature, including ‘Local Members’ and ‘List Members’, is asked to form a government.
How are ‘Local Members’ and ‘List Members’ elected? Part 2
‘Local Members’ would be elected using a First-Past-the-Post system. The candidate with the most votes in each district wins. That is one vote.
The other vote would be for a political party and used to elect ‘List Members’. This is the Proportional Representation part.
The total votes for each political party with more than 3% of the vote would be divided by the number of seats in the legislature to determine how many seats each party is entitled to.
So, if a party is entitled to 50 seats but has only 45 elected ‘Local Members’, five ‘List Members’ are elected to fill the other seats.
Sounds like the LIBRANOs designed this to harness their GTA voter base to steal elections.
I'll vote NO to that.

unsure but it was supposedly though of by a group of average citizens who sat on a commitie and studied this .
as of now the major parties have not said if they support it or not at least pc's and liberals haven't., believe the ndp and green's support it.
myself i'm unsure why the liberals have decided to have the vote on it this fall, it seems like a way to distract the voters from the real issues and the provincial election.

No, the Westminster style election is just fine.

Thats because they stand to gain seats, especially the Greens. I'd vote NAY!
This may come as a surprise to the Cons on forum but this Liberal is staunchly against anything even remotely like this change. It will muddy up a system that is not in need of change. The system is not broken (much) don't fix it! Since I am now across the river in Quebec I don't have a vote but I hope this does not pass.
Imagine this happening in Quebec. Do we really need to give new life to the separatist cause?

the liberals in ontario actually haven't came out in favour of this yet . well see is the election starts and parties are forced to say if they support it or not.
the system wasn't broken so i'm not sure why they did this whole electoral reform comission thing and came up with this proposal.
think this system would really mess things up and we'd see lots of complicated minority governments in ontario for years to come if this passes.
The system is broken we have governments that don't represent what the people actually want. In my riding of Haliberton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock the mpp got 47% of the vote meaning that the majority of the people don't get the representative that they wanted, how is that fair? In my riding 10,000 people voted NDP including myself but I feel that my vote was not herd cause we have a conservative representing us, were is my representative that I wanted? The new system that they are purposing makes every vote count and maybe we can get rid of strategic voting which would have less people voting Liberal just to get rid of the Conservatives. Yes it will cause more minority governments but history shows they are the most productive. We need to vote YES

your right and so therefore the system is broken and the mmp system that is purposed is a better option.

If you believe that, then perhaps I might interest you in a bridge.

Dude !!! You don't have far to go. Get yourself across the bridge and get out of QC
Seriously though, as a new Ontario resident since July, how long do I have to be here in order to vote? Not that one vote is going to matter much, but I would like to have the right to vote in the next elections. Although, votes here do not appear to be as crucial as they are in Quebec.

So long as you are a permanent resident living in Ontario you have the right to vote. When the election is going every voter receives a card ( name of it escapes my mind right now) that basically say you information which confirms your right to vote. If you are unsure you can contact elections Ontario to tell them you are a new resident and confirming you are on the voters list, or when you go into the polling station bring proof that you are a permanent resident such as hydro bill Ontario drivers license and stuff like that which has your address on it.
How about that Thanks
I think tinkering with the Westminister system is a little beyond me, beyond the average voter.
