Ontario Leaders Debate
ryan29 @ Wed Sep 19, 2007 7:00 am
Well on this thursday night the leaders of the main 3 ontario political parties debate each other .
These debates are important for all 3 leaders including Dalton Mcguinty, John Tory and Howard Hampton.
The question for each is
Dalton Mcguinty - can he give voters a reason for re-electing him after 4 rather unimpressive years in power , plagued by broken prmises, layoffs and mini-scandals .
John Tory - can he coinvince voters to look at other important issues facing ontario and get them to move on from the faith based school issue .
can he coinvince them he's ready to be premier and different than other pc leaders .
Howard Hampton- can he coinvince voters that he is another potential choice , and get them to look at him as a possible player in a future minority government.
Frank De jong - Green leader - not in debates but will he get symapthy votes for not being allowed in the debate?
noticed on facebook , there is agroup with hundreds of members called "let frank in " all about him not being allowed in debates .
At this point I believe this faith-based schools thingy will be pivital.
The LIBRANOs will get a black eye for bringing up the "inconvenient truth" of the catholic schools.
The Catholics schools are hurting their cause with their inconvenient refusal to countenance HPV innoculations. Bad timing......

I don't like the faith based school issue, but I can't stand the other two. Also, and I'm surprised there hasn't been discussion on it, but Ontarians are also voting on electoral reform to adopt an MMP policy.

I'll be watching that one with great interest.

As will I. I can say with 95% certainty it won't pass. But will still be interesting.

think its too bad that people have only paid attention to the faith based school issue, in ontario there is so many other issues which need attention including economy, health care and crime.
look at toronto as an example it has lots of crime and nothing is being done to stop it or has been proposed this election .
the conservatives would be doing alot better if real issues had emerged during this campaign, the liberals must be laughing at the campaign so far.

not sure whats happening with the referendum , not sure it was ever intended to actually pass. you have to wonder why government set the 60% level of supported needed plus the 50% in at least 50 ridings.
( note in ontario there is no election signs yet for this referendum , so its hard to figure out whats going on and if people support it, also few polls have been released on it )
it seems like a waste of millions of our tax dollars , especially if nothing changes on election day even after this referendum.

It's not a waste. It is truly democratic, no matter how much the Liberals and Conservatives dislike it. To hold this referendum is exactly what needed to be done. It won't be passed, but now we can say we tried

I'm not sure that funding all religous schools is the solution. I think that Tory should either cut funding to Catholic schools or fund all private schools if not all schools (vouhers for instance) equally.

myself i'm starting to think this whole faith based issue should of waited until after the election supposing the pc's won . then they should of asked people what they wanted done on this issue, by having consultations and asking parents.
the problem is now its been twisted so much by the liberals , its now nothing more than a liberal fear tool aimed at scaring voters. instead of actually debating what should be done to improve the education system.

It is the "hidden agenda" 207 edition.
The LIBRANOs are using it to distract attention from real issues----like their broken promises.

unfortuently this election is begining to remind me of the 2000 stockwell day alliance election and as a ontario resident i'm quite annoyed at the lack of discussion on major issues, including the economy and jobs.
the whole liberal fear campaign is absolutley rediculous and it really is embarrassing that they have decided to do this,
that party will do absoluely anyhting for votes, its unreal even worse than the chertien liberals.

You would be correct. There is almost no info on it being obviously given.

It wasn't the Liberals who made the announcement regarding funding to faith-based schools.
It was kind of a politically naive move by John Tory to do it, and doesn't really make sense. He doesn't come from a political background, but someone on his staff should have realized what would happen by making that announcement. Not sure how you can blame Liberals for a PC mistake.
The announcement was a gift from the PCs to the Liberals.
What do you expect them to do? Not run with it?
