Appointing Jean as GG won't win the Libs a pile of votes from "pur-laine" Quebecers (not that it will hurt them).
What this is really about is ensuring that Quebec's various ethnic communities remain federalist at a time when the PQ and BQ have been making more of an effort to gain support from those communities.
Um, how about we actually have A real General in the spot of Governor General, I mean, They've actually been to war and know the world, and would represent our military in the best manner.
Actually, instead of having this stupid position, why not just get rid of it all together. I'm sick and tired of this socialist nightnare we have has government. I just love paying taxes so the GG can host tea parties at here castle, and fly all over the world to get drunk with a bunch of politicians, while the position initself holds no power what so ever.
Because, the Govnernor-General is not a military post. It's a political post.
"He or she serves a symbolic role as the Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Governor General attends state banquets and functions, makes and hosts state visits, and awards medals, decorations, and prizes (including the Governor General's Literary Awards)."
Sorry, a real general would best serve this position. As a general is more worldly than some Journalist at the CBC who hosts Rough Cuts.
"Because, the Govnernor-General is not a military post. It's a political post."
Oh, would you care to here from some troops on the matter?

Note the word symbolic.
Why does a military carreer trump others? It's simply another path through life.
Here's an idea: how about we start picking our Governor Generals according to how QUALIFIED they are?
"Why does a military carreer trump others? It's simply another path through life."
Because the've actually put their life on the line for the country, and they have alot better understanding of world politics than some hack reporter. That right there trumps a CBC personality.
For instance, what would you say if they nominated Don Cherry for the position. He's pro military, Born in Canada(although as our latest and former GG, not a requirement), and the biggest pro Canadian today. Would he fit the mold in your view?
He would and he wouldn't. His choice of attire is a major sumbling block on the way to being GG.
You're right in that soldiers have a unique view on the world and for that reason I would nominate Romeo Dallaire, but he's already got government job. But soldiers don't have a monopoly on the Zeitgeist and not all reporters are hacks either. 2004 was the worst year for deaths of journalists globally and many CBC reporters have covered many a war. Of course, such is not the case for our next GG to be.
