Poll - Best deterrent to gun crimes
Bodah @ Sat Dec 10, 2005 7:57 am
The guns used in the majority of these crimes were illegally obtained in the first place.
Banning law abiding citizens from owning handguns isn't going to do shit.
They obviously haven't learned anything from the gun registry, criminals don't register their weapons.
This is just an attempt to buy votes from the people of Toronto, and an insult to their intelligence. They are 10 years too late. And shame on the mayor of Toronto for running around with the Liberals all day, kissing ass.

I second what Cyborob said. Perhaps if robbers knew that everyone else had a gun, they would shoot in stead of threaten.
WLDB @ Sat Dec 10, 2005 10:47 am
I say all three would be good.
Although this is hypocritical it wouldnt bother me if all the gangs who participate in gun crime were shot.
Virgil @ Sat Dec 10, 2005 3:23 pm
Well, that sort of thing varies with circumstance for me. If they all got shot in some dumb gang fight, then no I wouldn't mind at all. But if we lined'em up and shot them all, would we really be mush better than them?
But yes, all three for me too.

Hey chopper, do most police officers-slash-Interpretive Dancer / Professional Re-De-Virginizers share that opinion or do you think a lot would actually support this Liberal plan??
Hey Robair...sorry for the late reply, but I had to wait until after my police officers-slash-Interpretive Dancer / Professional Re-De-Virginizers support group met and we discussed this matter
Honestly speaking, I haven't met a single member of the law enforcement community that whole-heartedly supports the current gun registry let alone a handgun ban. I think most of us support some form of firearm registry, however, I think a group of untrained monkeys could have implemented a better system than what we currently have. There is no data at all that supports the claims that it has done anything to stop gun violence. Everyone I have spoken to thus far has agreed that a ban on handguns is purely foolish. I phoned around and concucted a rough poll this morning. I called a couple of Police Depts, and found nearly 70% of the members I spoke with owned personal handguns. Then I went a step further and called a couple of Fire Departments...I was surprised to find the number wasa slightly higher! (nearly 74%)
Now I live in a very small town in North-Eastern Alberta...I think I can estimate that about 65% of the population of my town owns a handgun in their home. Not once in the history of my town has there been ANY form of gun violence.
Can someone tell me how this handgun ban is going to help again????

Well if you listened to all the 'follow Martin at a whim' Liberal sheeples, they have a myriad of reasons...
All gun crime will disappear.
Criminals will all hand in there guns like good little Liberals.
The cops will have nothing to do.
Gun manufacturers will be out of business.
And everyone will live happily ever after.
Now lets all stand for a rousing rendition of Oh Canada!!

As an American, and a law abiding gun owner, I am starting to rethink whether it should be legal for US citiizens to own handguns. I can't recall the exact figure, back in my college days, but we have the highest murder rate of an "civilized" nation in the world and also the highest rate of gun ownership I believe.
My buddy moved from CA to South Dakota, he got a concealed weapons permit with no test, by paying $40, this is wrong! Also if we are going to continue to allow Americans to own guns then there should be a much longer waiting period and a required firearms certification course. This 2 week wait is a joke!
If Canada wants to cut down on gun crimes, then they should probably screen people entering from the US better. I understand, from my Canadian friend, there is a real problem with smuggling guns from the US.

I think people should need to take a test regadless of whether they want to conceal the weapon or not. I've changed my mind and don't think that a gun ban will solve anything, but their has to be a test to prove that someone buying a gun is to be a responsible gun owner.
And yes, probably all of our illegal firearms came from the U.S., mostly from Alaska through B.C. I believe.
the studies show that the biggest deterrent to crime is the risk of getting caught, not longer sentences
Virgil @ Tue Dec 13, 2005 8:55 pm
Why can the risk not increase, as well as the punishment?

Seems that it would be a good time to put a new face on Canadian justice. As Canadians, I think we all have a sense of compassion for our fellow man, however, we need to look at serious punishment for certain crimes. Solitary confinement, hard labour and longer sentences. So many of these ridiculous sentences, terms of release etc are a pitiful joke not to mention a kick in the face to the families of victims.
